Hi everyone, hope that your week is off to a good start! I have a couple of important news items to cover today so I will get straight on with another Symbol Blog update!

For those of you that held XEM in your private wallets at the time of snapshot that have not already redeemed your pre- or post-release opt-in XYM you need to complete the process through your Symbol desktop wallet – a guide on how to do this can be found here. There is a summary of the opt-in results here and you can check your claim after it has been submitted through your wallet.
If you have any problems then you can contact helpdesk on Discord and someone will be able to help you navigate through the process.
The life of an open-source developer

Hatchet has posted a thread to explain her views and shed some light on what it is like to be a lead developer of a blockchain (or any open source project):
We knew that Hatchet had taken a break from Twitter already but the reason for this was the backlash from the community which was fueled by falling prices. The developers are motivated by building something that they believe in. Constant negativity, abuse and complaints do nothing to motivate a team whereas seeing the community get behind a project and contribute their creativity is something that drives the developers forward.
This is something that I strongly believe in. Even just from writing the blog, I have noticed that every negative comment I have received (and it isn’t many) really affects me, it makes me think “why do I bother” or “maybe I am not good enough”. Positive comments and feedback have the power to drive me forward and motivate me to work harder. Unfortunately, for me, it is the negative comments that have more of an impact, it hurts and makes me angry that someone that is not giving anything can attack someone that is at least trying to do something useful.
The developers have this same problem but it is amplified 1,000x. They are trying their best to develop something incredibly complex that has the potential to have a real global impact. Why are they doing it? Because they have a passion and they want to see this through. It really bugs the hell out of me that people are expecting overnight gains and are making unrealistic and selfish demands. You can track the team’s progress on Discord and see exactly what is happening behind the scenes. We have given them our vote of confidence in the hard forks that happened last year. They are just getting started so give them the time, respect and support that they need. Right now they are tired of what is going on, feeling demotivated and I don’t really blame them.
Yes, we all have a selfish interest in the success of Symbol and NEM, however, if you think about it logically it is clear that spreading negative sentiment, attacking the developers and complaining is only hurting the project and the value of your own holdings. By giving something back to the community or even just constructively participating on Discord and Twitter you will be adding value to the project.
You can see that Jag’s tweet is born out of frustration but it is very true. If you don’t believe in the project anymore then you have the power to sell up and move on. That not only helps you by freeing up your cash to buy into something else (or get yourself a holiday and relax a bit) but you can (hopefully) walk away from it a happier person. It also really helps the rest of us that are trying to support a project that we feel passionate about and there is a lot of passion out there – please don’t spoil things for the rest of us. We want the developers to stay and we want to achieve success. As an added bonus, if you guys are right then you can look back and say that you told us so ๐
I personally don’t have anything against those of you that are long-term holders of XEM and XYM, the people I take issue with are those that want to hurt the project or those people that are making a contribution. That’s not OK and we need to try to stamp this out. I will say though that if you are a HODLer then help yourselves, help the project and help the rest of the community by helping out however you can. However small you think your contribution will be it may make a difference and for sure if all of us took less of a backseat we would see some seismic changes, huge community growth, exchange listings (all the things that you want to see happen).
I urge you to read Hatchet’s thread as she speaks far more eloquently and concisely than I do! However, I will leave you with this – take note, and as our Japanese friends always say – do your best.

Hiring spree
If I didn’t convince you in the post above that we can be a force to be reckoned with then I hope that this will change your mind.
Hatchet is writing 37(!) job descriptions. That’s 37 new roles and 37 new team members, assuming we can find the right people for the jobs. If you look back at the last year you will see that the first 6-8 months were largely taken up with sorting out the mess left by NGL. Since then the focus has been on infrastructure and the team is tiny. Now we get to spread our wings attract new talent and start to work on some of the “sexier” projects that you guys want to see happen. With more hands on deck, we should start to see rapid growth so stay patient, we should see exciting things happen in the not too distant future.
NFT-Drive translation
So I know what NFT-Drive does and I have written about it several times in the past, but it is inaccessible to the English speaking world at present. Radio is aiming to change this by creating an English translation of the site. He is currently running a quest to get support for this so if you would like to see it happen then please consider making a small contribution ๐
