Symbol blockchain news update – 07/04/24

Good morning XYM City! Hope you are all well and enjoying your weekends! 😊 A quick Sunday post to keep you updated on the goings on over the last week – it has been an eventful one for the team!

Update Your Nodes!

I am sure that you have all been following this but if you haven’t and you run a node then it is important. A new version of Catapult client has been released and this is a mandatory update so make sure that you log into your node and upgrade shoetring, bootstrap or recompile from source (as I am dreading for my Raspberry Pi 😂).

There was a network fork at block 3191538 on April 30th which affected some nodes and not others and meant that nobody could resync from scratch.

I have to say, there was some chatter on X questioning the speed of the rollout for the fix but I can assure you that the team (99% of it Jag and Wayon) put in a lot of hours trying to track down and reproduce the bug, I think once that was done the fix was relatively straightforward. If you are interested in the technical details you can read the postmortem that’s published on Notion. It is actually a really interesting read and not super technical, I learned a lot about the guts of secret locks, caches and hunting for bugs following the progress on the Syndicate’s Discord channel and I will say again the Jag and Wayon are wizards 🧙 It’s great to see them at work 😁

Oh, and there are some new features in the latest release too thanks to Toshi’s contribution! I need to familiarise myself with these!

Proof of Your Life

I saw this entered into the NEMTUS Hackathon and now it seems that it is becoming a commercialised service. Great to see that Symbol is kickstarting new businesses! From the article it looks like “Proof of Your Life Corporation” has been officially announced which aims to create a decentralised ID (DID) platform utilising the Symbol blockchain.

Currently, the company’s website allows users to create accounts using Google accounts, automatically generating a linked Symbol address and a simple profile page. The platform aims to allow users to share their profile information, including social media accounts, nationality, residence, nickname, name, date of birth, educational background, employment history, qualifications, and event participation according to their privacy preferences. I like the idea but I think that my privacy settings would be a lot stricter 😅

NFT-Drive EX Wallet Card

It looks like NFT-Drive has released a limited-edition contactless bank card-like wallet for your crypto needs. If I understand correctly you can just go withdraw cash from an ATM with it though! 😁 It seems that it can only be used for crypto transactions at venues that accept crypto payments on Android devices. It does support multiple currencies though, including XYM:

  • Symbol (XYM)
  • Ethereum (ETH)
  • Polygon (MATIC)
  • Shiba Inu (SHIB)
  • Tether (USDT)
  • JPYC Coin (JPYC)
  • USD Coin (USDC)
  • Wrapped Ethereum (WETH)

Interesting concept, so we will see if it takes off! There are only 20 cards available initially I think you have to pay if you want to own one.

Thanks!

OK, I am going to leave it here for now as I have a ton of housework to do 😅 but before I go…

A Belated Happy Easter!

Just including this for those of you who celebrate Easter and that the design team seem to have artwork for all events which I love 😁
