Symbol blockchain news update 25/08/21

Yesterday was a tech heavy update so today I will slow things down and report on some fun stories coming out of the Symbol Twitterverse. First though I will plug a recent techy article published on Symbol Blog (sorry!) 😁

Monitoring Symbol transactions with Javascript and Google Chrome

Just wanted to draw your attention to this article posted on the blog yesterday. It is a translation of @xembook‘s Qiita article on monitoring transactions on the Symbol blockchain. It uses Javascript but you can run the whole thing just using the Google Developer Console in you Chrome web browser – it’s super simple to do. Just copy and paste the code in and you will have taken your first programming steps.

Constructive criticism is what we need

Just saw this post (actually a thread) from @jaguar0625 and agree with his sentiment. My advice is don’t be outwardly hostile to others in the first place and call their code shitty 😆 Instead give some constructive suggestions if you can. If you are the recipient of this then don’t get defensive, listen and potentially learn.

Nobody is perfect and knows everything, if you get stuck in your ways and are not open to learning then what you do becomes irrelevant pretty quickly as the rest of the world moves on. Also a bit of lively debate is always sometimes a good thing!

Confession: my code is so ugly that I am ashamed to show it to anyone 😁

Symvolution

Here it is – Symvolution! And for a limited time only it is joining in with tomatina fever. I have just had a look at the game and it really does look like a class act. I am so sad that there is not an English version though. I really hope that there is a translation in the pipeline, would be great to actually understand the story and what the characters are saying!

Nearly a millionaire!

I am so jealous. It is my goal to get to 1,000,000 XYM but I don’t think I will ever get there 😭 Congrats to @KisekinoF who has nearly achieved this goal! A few more harvests and you’ll reach that magic number! 😁

NFT-Drive movie trailer 😆

@hanabata_ke has been at it again! Here is the latest movie trailer (in English) for NFT-Drive – very dramatic! 😊

The mind of an artist

I saw this post from @mahorobart whose Symbol NFT work we have featured on multiple occasions in the past. I thought it was magical so wanted to share. I have zero artistic ability (this is not an exaggeration either) so I find it fascinating to watch the process of creating an artwork from nothing and that people have this talent that is so alien to me.

On the road again

Since boosting @4taka1013‘s QUEST I have been following their progress around Kyushu (in a Symbol t-shirt!). Looks like it is day 6 and another 88 Km travelled. I guess that there will be several more days riding before the goal is complete but good luck! Here is a link to the quest for more information..

Tomatina 2021 is go!

So I still couldn’t find a central source of events for NEM Tomatina 2021 but keep an eye out on Twitter as I should imagine that there will be a lot of tomato related activity! Edit: it is now the 25th and Twitter is alive with tomato throwing!

I have reported on lots of tomatina related announcements recently and you can search the blog for tomatina activities here. I also found this site giving a summary of what is going on so check it out!

If you want to know more about the event itself then check out @xembook‘s blog post here:

Time: 10:00am – late (JST) on the 25th August

Purpose: You will be able to participate in various different events on the day. We have reported on some of the activities under development on the blog but I can’t find a definitive list of events. I think that next year (with the help of some of the Japanese XYMbassadors) I will try to provide more information in English ahead of the event so that we can spread the word outside of Japan.

Rules:

  1. Tomato mosaics are worthless
  2. Join with a disposable account on the day, I guess you won’t want your main account spammed with tomato mosaics! 🍅
  3. This is a fun event – no commercialisation or trying to make money from the event. You may fall foul of the law (especially in Japan) if you do so..

How to take part:

After creating a new account you will be able to obtain tomato mosaics through the SigAnn tomato faucet – there are further instructions in the NEMLOG article.

Activities: Ah, it seems that xembook also doesn’t have a complete list of events but is currently waiting for developers to let him know. I guess that this will be coming very soon so I will report with a complete list of activities in the next day or so if I hear any more.

He has created his own activities too, including a tool to swap your tomatoes to bananas with XEMbook or with other users (e.g. Twitter followers) using “QRoss“. I will experiment with this on the day and maybe tweet about how to achieve this as I think I need to give it a try before I try to explain it! 😁

That’s all for today!

You don’t have long to get involved with tomatina so get out there and go tomato crazy!

Thanks for reading and we will be back soon with another update 😊
