Symbol blockchain news update – 21/10/22

Hi guys, it’s been a while but I couldn’t not get a post out this week so here’s a quick update of what has been happening in Symbol and NEM land over the last week or so.

Gacha!

How cool is this?! A real-life gacha machine that accepts Symbol payment via QR code! I will be in Japan next May with my family and will be in Tokyo for a few days (I probably should have booked some holiday before announcing it on the blog 😬) so I will be paying a visit to @22CAF1 and I’m sure that I will be writing it up as a blog post shortly after. I am not sure how many foreigners they get visiting so maybe it will be hard to go incognito 🥸 😁

Homeward bound

We already saw Symbol advertising outside of Shinjuku station in Tokyo and now we are seeing Symbol-related art displayed at Hakata Station in Fukuoka. Apparently is “the largest and busiest railway terminal in Kyushu” according to Wikipedia! Those faces in the bottom right photo look familiar 🤔

Video NFTs

Just a reminder, you can literally write any data to the blockchain and video is no exception. Radio managed to store a 78-second video using NFT-Drive and it only cost a shade over 517 XYM or less than $18.

Symbol hits the OpenSea

Well, this is interesting. @EUFjZEyIuzS9rIi is experimenting with creating Ethereum and Polygon-compatible Symbol on-chain NFTs that are ERC-1155 compliant and can be listed on OpenSea. NFT-Drive Mirai now features an “OpenSea mode” which allows metadata to be added when creating a Symbol on-chain NFT. This article describes the process and it looks like creating the contract is not for the fainthearted. It is an interesting concept and something that I have wondered about previously, I hope that the whole process will be automated in the future or even better OpenSea start supporting Symbol.

NFT gaming

Now, this is cool! @feiton81118 has created a playable game within an on-chain NFT and it seems like it’s a relatively simple process too. Just create an HTML game and then turn it into an NFT using NFT-Drive, view it on the explorer and you’re good to go! This game is tiny but I am sure that you can make something quite fancy with a few megabytes of storage.

EDIT: I’d literally just hit the publish button and I saw this! It’s freaking awesome!! 😍

In-game mosaic exchange

More magic from the wonderful world of Toshi! Here he has used SSS to transfer a mosaic between two players within a demo game. One player just clicks the other and enters the mosaic and amount that they want to transfer, the transaction is then signed in the SSS extension and the transfer is sent. There’s also a nice chat function in the game 😊 I can really see this type of interaction having a huge impact in online games for the transfer of in-game tokens, equipment etc. I guess rather than going to an NPC to sell your unwanted gear you can just set up your own market stall and start trading with other players.

Getting handsy

Love to see Symbol being used in crazy ways and this is definitely a good example! The masked man @subarumansp has been experimenting with electronics and is making it rain XYM by activating a motion sensor 😁 Perhaps this could be useful to alert you to someone snooping around somewhere you don’t want them to be 🤔

Symbol article

Always good to see Symbol getting some attention and @TokenEconomist wrote an article in Japanese that was published earlier in the week. I was also very pleased to see a link to Symbol Blog there too! 🤩

Thanks

Thanks for reading, have a great weekend and I will be back again soon with another Symbol Blog update!
