Symbol blockchain news update – 20/09/22

Good morning all! I’m back with a short update today – is it me or is it a bit quiet out there in Symbol-land?

Symbol / Ethereum cross-chain swaps

Gimre has implemented a cross-chain swap between Symbol and Ethereum testnets using Symbol’s secret lock functionality. In this excerpt from the documentation Alice swaps 0.2 ETH for 7887 XYM. Pretty cool! I guess(?) that a similar method could be implemented for other blockchains too.

You can see the unlock transactions here:

And all done with no previous experience with Solidity – nice work 👏

Symbol learning resources

First of all, NEMTUS have created a resource showing how aggregate bonded transactions can be written using @nemtus/symbol-sdk-typescript. They use an example where three people split a restaurant bill. Each diner signs the transaction for their share of the meal in order to pay the restaurant. This doesn’t seem like science fiction either as you can pay for a meal using XYM in Japan. I guess nobody is going to sit in a café and write out a couple of hundred lines of code to do this but it shows how such transactions could be built into a mobile wallet to facilitate splitting a bill between friends. The article is in Japanese but it is easily translatable so if you’re interested in how you can do this in Symbol then please give it a read!

Secondly, this is great news, I was actually going to start on this a couple of months ago for the blog but it looks like Leon has volunteered to translate xembook‘s “Quick Learning Symbol” guide. Which covers everything from querying account data to all of the different transaction types in Symbol. It uses the Symbol browserify version of the javascript SDK. This means that you can run the code directly from the developer console of your web browser!

Will be great to see this translated into English – if you need any help then just let me know!

Thank you for the faucet!

I am not sure if this is the same faucet that I used, but if it was around in early 2017, it was responsible for introducing me to NEM. Thank you Leon! 😊

Pandora’s box opens again 😁

It really is the Leon show today! This tweet may be controversial but it has made me think of this issue of kickback rewards in a different way. I am not going to enter this debate as I have decided that both sides have a point but I will leave it here as it is an interesting take on the issue.

And if you are running your node on AllNodes then consider going independent and setting up your own node with Symbol Bootstrap – it’s incredibly easy, especially if you are familiar with Linux already.

Thanks!

Thanks as always for reading! I will be back again soon with another Symbol Blog update 😊
