Symbol pirate flag

Symbol blockchain news update โ€“ 20/08/21

Hi everyone, it is Friday already! I actually had to think about that, it felt like a Wednesday! This week must have flown by, oh well that’s fine by me. I will worry about the huge backlog of work on Monday ๐Ÿ˜‚

Today we have a relatively short update but I think there are some cool stories, the tomatina event this year looks like it will be epic and I am really pleased to see so many people developing ideas and applications for Symbol. Thanks to everyone that is contributing and to @xembook who is coordinating everything!

As I mention below, I have let myself down this year and done nothing for tomatina but I aim to redeem myself for next year’s event.

Flying the flag for Symbol

In my last update you will have noticed that I used the Symbol flag as the “featured image” for the post. You also will have seen many community members updating the Twitter avatars. I know that this caused some confusion (and sometimes annoyance) in the community but it was a temporary measure to show solidarity for the core devs and for fight for the future of Symbol.

You probably will have seen this tweet from @Jaguar0625 already but it explains some of the context to the situation. As far as I know things are on their way to a satisfactory conclusion, at least I hope so anyway!

๐Ÿคž I will be changing Symbol Blog’s avatar back to its regular picture but be warned, I will be ready to change it back again if the situation changes! ๐Ÿ˜Š๐Ÿ’ช

Nice work mikun!

I saw this post from @mikunNEM the other day and wanted to feature it here. He has made a simple game for the Symbol tomatina event where a cat throws tomatoes at monkeys (I love it ๐Ÿ˜‚). Tomatoes are actually Symbol mosaics and each time one is thrown a transaction is sent on the Symbol blockchain.

I am genuinely inspired by this and although I won’t get time this year to make anything for the tomatina event I will develop something (very simple!) for next year.

I actually missed his first post about the development of the game – the cat is amazing!

To what he has achieved in a matter of a few days is nothing short of remarkable!

Tomatina Minecraft

Whilst we are on the subject of tomatina and integrating Symbol into games, here’s a post from @nabe387690473. We reported on this story in a previous news update. But it seems that he is inviting up to 20 users to take part in the Minecraft tomato throwing fun on 25th August for the tomatina event. If you would like to take part I guess just let @nabe387690473 know (although I have a feeling this will be massively oversubscribed). The server will go live on 24th August (JST) and he is setting it up on a high spec VPS. Unfortunately, even with some serious computing power the number of users will have to be limited to 20 to avoid any issues with the server not being able to cope.

If you do apply and are accepted to take part then you will need to have the Java version of Minecraft installed on your machine. It looks like great fun so I encourage you to support it and all of the other tomatina events going on!

School of NEM

Finally a @SchoolofNEM tweet sent in by @bestgoldangel (thanks!). So I knew that the “plus” of PoS+ rewarded smaller accounts more than XYM large holders for supporting the network but I didn’t know exactly what the threshold was until this boost becomes negligible. School of NEM has taught me a lesson today – apparently the activity score in POS+ drops to almost zero when an account holds more than 200,000 XYM. This means that even if XYM whales are pinging transactions all over the place, they would not see any boost to their harvesting income over the proof of stake element of account importance. Conversely, small accounts with say 15,000 XYM will find that they get a larger boost from sending transactions and being an active user of the network.

Thanks!

Thanks again for reading – we will be back soon with some more news for you! ๐Ÿ˜Š
