Symbol blockchain news update – 12/09/21 (plus QUEST Sunday)

I’m back from holiday and seem to have missed a lot of news over the last week. I have been reading through Twitter but I still haven’t caught up so I am just going to mention a few past tidbits and then get straight up to date with the latest goings on in Symbol land.

It seems strange writing the blog again after a whole week off, I will get back into my stride soon though I am sure and you can look forward to Symbol Blog spamming up your Twitter feed again 😁

If you are going to run a node then keep it up to date!

This is really important! If you run a node then keep it up to date. It doesn’t take any time to do and you have a duty to your delegates to maintain the node that they are harvesting on.

According to the Symbol node list 5.3% of nodes are currently running release v1.0.0.0. There are around 200 harvesters worth tens of millions of XYM delegating to these nodes (which all apparently crashed last week). It’s also a lesson to harvesters to make sure that you are delegating to a node that is kept up to date.

A busy weekend!

@0x6861746366574 doesn’t stop working just because it is the weekend (I know that feeling too). Here are some of the tasks that she has been working on. I am glad you managed to get some D&D time in – I haven’t played for years, maybe I should take it up again – Symbol virtual D&D group anyone? 😊

I can confirm that the secret article has been written! 🤩

But it is so secret that I have not seen it at the time of writing this post 😆 I am sure that I will receive it soon and when I do I will be reading and posting on the blog. Really excited about this and extremely grateful to Hatchet for taking the time to contribute to the blog – it is really appreciated! I hope that I will be able to post it later this evening but depending on time differences and when I receive the document it could be tomorrow morning UK time.

The team are also taking suggestions for the name of the planned hard fork so reply to the tweet and put your ideas forward, you never know it might be chosen!

Voting key update

For those of you lucky people that are rich enough to have to worry about this please make sure that you update your voting keys. There is a guide here and as you can see from this list many of you have not done it!

Voting keys need to be updated every 6 months and for most of you it is as simple as logging into your node and running these commands..

It’s coming..😱 I am very much looking forward to seeing the new design and content of the Symbol website. I have a feeling I read on Discord that it was coming in October but don’t hold me to that.

New QUEST feature

Looks like a language filter has been added to QUEST which will enable you to filter only quests that have been posted in your selected language.

Personally I am not sure why you would want this (at least at this stage of QUESTs development). The vast majority of quests posted are in Japanese and there is some great stuff going on. I would not want to filter these out! Actually there are only 4 quests ever posted in English and one of them is mine (fun fact – the first ever quest completed on the mainnet) 😁

Interesting QUESTs

QUEST notifications

I was thinking the other day that this really should be implemented (the developers read my mind). I always forget to vote and when quests that I have boosted end or are completed so notifications for this would be great. Also notifications for boosts received, milestone updates etc would be a really nice touch. It keeps you connected to the quests that you are following and draws you back to the site.

XYM price Twitter bot

This is a cool little quest from @s_kma_live. They have created a bot that pulls the current XYM price (I think from Zaif) every 12 hours and posts an image on Twitter with the information embedded in the image (as well as in the text of the tweet). I think that there is still time to boost the quest even though it has been completed.

Adding additional functionality to the Python SDK

Here is another quest started by @nobu_kyutech who is aiming to further develop the Symbol Python SDK and add new functionality. I couldn’t pick up from the quest description exactly what he plans to do, just that the Python SDK was not as complete as the Javascript/Typescript SDK. I think it is a great idea as lots of people are using the Python SDK.

Apparently the core devs sometimes read my blog so I will say again, I would love to see more documentation and examples for the Python SDK 😁

Live streaming Symbol wallet and block explorer development

Here’s a quest from @salaryman_tousi who will be developing a Symbol block explorer and wallet and will be live streaming himself coding. I think I missed the first event as it was scheduled for 9th September but there is another event on the 18th if you would like to tune in. Apparently the block explorer and wallet will be released as web applications by September 25th – I will be keeping an eye on this quest for sure 😊

Thanks!

Well that’s it from me for today. I am back and Symbol Blog is back up and running again! It feels good to be writing about Symbol again. Thanks for reading and stay tuned for some more news updates and articles in the near future.

I always bang on about this but I would love to see some community contributions. I know that there are a lot of people out there in the Symbol-verse that are far more technically gifted and far better writers than I am. If that’s you then help me out here! 😁
