11 Nov Symbol blockchain news update – 11/11/21
Hi everyone, it’s Thursday already and I need to get a post out quickly this morning as I have a ton of things to do today, apologies for the rush and probable abundance of typos but here is today’s Symbol Blog update
Probability
Just a reminder to harvesters out there, your chance of harvesting is linked to your importance score, even if it is high there is no guarantee that you will harvest as regularly as you expect over a short period of time. All nodes are equal (if they are properly maintained and running) so switching nodes will not affect the probability of you harvesting. Some days you are lucky, others you are not. Add in the fact that the more harvesters there are that are active at a given point in time, the less likely you are to harvest since there is a larger pool of importance all vying for every block. Just a thought for the day after I woke up to find a new harvester that had only been with me for a couple of days had left with their 2M+ XYM balance. It really is all down to importance and chance, not the node. If you look at harvesting success over a longer timeframe then you will see that it evens out. Stick with a node if you believe in what the node owner is doing and value their contribution to the ecosystem.
Fork updates 🥳
Well it looks like it is good news this morning! Cyprus is running away with it and now has over 90% support. We will know the final result in a few hours but it looks like it is now in the bag. I needed an excuse to open a fancy bottle of wine or whisky so I think that the fork passing will be the perfect occasion 😁 Well done everyone for upgrading and supporting the fork! If you haven’t upgraded then you really need to do so for the sake of your harvesters.
Harlock is also looking good, there’s a full week still to go but the majority of NEM nodes now support the fork which is fantastic news! Hopefully this will be another reason to celebrate next week!
Bye bye NGL nodes 👋
Just a quick note that was broadcast to everyone on Discord yesterday. It seems like NGL non-voting nodes will be shut down, pretty much with immediate effect. After the Cyprus hardfork all NGL voting nodes will also go so if you can but don’t run a voting node then please do! Testnet will be reset and there are two new sites symbol.services (I think it is used to pull statistics such as node information from the network) and symbol.fyi which is the new explorer address (I think that the old one is already down).

22 Café get their own node! ☕️
This is cool. I have reported on 22 Café a few times now, they are based in Japan and accept XYM payments. It seems that they also wanted to support the fork so have started their own node. Well done guys! 😊
Meet Hermes 📱
Again, we have reported on the new Hermes wallet which is currently in production a few times before but here are some additional mockups. It does look very cool and I am looking forward to seeing the final finished product!
XYM City art 🎨
Saw this whilst browsing Twitter and I love it! There is some really cool artwork around at the moment. This is definitely something that I will stay well away from though, I know my talents and art and design is not one of them.
The captains are also looking good and fighting the fight for us. I like the portraits at the bottom, it looks like it should be a card game. Maybe someone can add new characters in and make this happen.

Symbol phone cases!
I feel like we will start seeing more and more community Symbol merch, we have seen T-shirts and hoodies, I think that there was a quest for a Symbol snowboard at some point in the past too. Seems now we have phone cases.. Wonder what we will see next!

New QUEST feature
I noticed that a new “offer” function has been added to QUEST, unfortunately I haven’t had time to look into this in more detail but check out this tweet thread to find out more information on what it is and how to use it.
