Symbol blockchain news update – 10/04/23

Good morning everyone! Apologies for the gap since the last post, just recovering from my second brush with COVID and I’m only just feeling vaguely human again ☣️

NEMTUS hackathon winners!

The NEMTUS Hackathon results are in! This year saw five winners chosen from a list of 17 entries, all of which have integrated Symbol into their applications. Congratulations to the winners, especially to the Cycle team that took home the grand prize this year! I was going to write a post last week describing some of the applications but COVID scuppered my plans. Hopefully, I can get it done this week, there are some nice apps even though some are difficult for a foreigner like me to understand 😁

NEM supernode enrollment for April

OK, I know this is old news now, but if you didn’t already enrol in the NEM Supernode Programme this month, here is the address you need to use. In my defence, I did retweet this when it was announced but you should have been keeping an eye out yourselves anyway 😉

NEM slowdown post mortem

I actually missed this myself but the post-mortem for the NEM chain slowdown was published on March 28th. If you didn’t read it already then go check it out. It is an obscure bug that took nearly 8 years to find but it was patched in the latest NIS release which if you are a node owner then you should now be running.

A belated happy birthday to NEM

And if you missed it, NEM is now 8 years old! One of the elder statesmen of the blockchain world 😁 So a belated happy birthday! I am sure that there will be many more to come. We should definitely throw a party for your 10th!

Symbol art

The Symbol design team have been working their magic yet again and they have just released the second series of “The Crew” recognising the efforts of prominent community members who do such a great job of showing their passion and creativity and showcasing Symbol to the rest of the world. Congrats guys and nice work team – these are awesome! Also just a reminder, these are released as CC0 meaning that you can use the images for whatever you want to so get creative and start making some community merch 💪

Open Source Conference 2023

I don’t have much information about this but it looks like Mikun was manning a booth and educating people about Symbol, NEM and NEMTUS at the Tokyo Open Source Conference 2023. Great to see we had a presence and I hope that the day went well 😊

DrugN

It looks like DrugN (built on Symbol) has gone live in the real world and is being trialled in Yokohama pharmacies! It is aimed at cutting down on wasting medicines and getting patients to remember to take them by rewarding them through the app. Hopefully, we will see it take off and go nationwide in the future. Good luck! 😊

Intercontinental gifts

I love this! I am not 100% sure who sent these gifts but it is incredibly generous and a really sweet gesture. The captains deserve more recognition and I am sure that this brought a smile to Gimre’s face when it arrived, there is some really cool stuff in there 😀

Hatchet in 3D

This is so cool! A 3D rendering of Hatchet! I wonder whether the other captains will be getting the 3D treatment. Would be cool to get them made into collectible figurines. I’d buy them 😁

XYM Comic

And finally, the latest instalment of the excellent XYM Comic is out! It’s available in both English and Japanese so check out the tweet below and give it a like!

Thanks!

Thanks again for reading. I will be back again soon with another update, hopefully, I will be COVID-free by then! 😁 If you have any news or articles that you would like to share then just let me know!
