Symbol blockchain news update – 06/07/22

Good morning Symbol and NEM land! Well, this is nice, I have something to write about and it’s only two days since the last post! Are things hotting up in XYM City? I like to be busy so keep the news coming people! 😁

Trackgood partnership

If you haven’t heard of Trackgood before then go check them out. They provide a supply chain tracking service so that when you buy food, goods or clothing you know exactly where it comes from and how far it has travelled. It’s great to see that they are building partnerships and especially nice to see that they are doing so in the UK! 🇬🇧 Finally, albeit indirectly, I am seeing Symbol grace our shores through a partnership with ShelfNow!

Now I haven’t heard of Shelf Now before but it seems that they enable trade between producers and retailers, allowing artisan goods to be sold and conveniently shipped directly from the source to the shop that wants to sell the product. It’s a shame that it is bulk orders only as living in the UK I might have been tempted to go shopping 😁

Now obviously this is Symbol Blog so in case you are wondering, Trackgood is built on Symbol 🦾

“Trackgood provides the next logical step by embracing the immutable blockchain to validate ShelfNow’s supply chain. Trackgoods innovative solution is powered by NEM’s Symbol blockchain technology and will enable ShelfNow to meet its core goals of simplicity, transparency and affordability.”

You can read the entire article here.

I really like this idea. More and more people are becoming conscious of where their food comes from, whether it is fairtrade and of the environmental impact of shipping products around the world. Having a solution to supply chain tracking and traceability can only be good for the consumer so I hope that we will see many new partnerships in the future.

NEM node rewards

I know that the team have been working really hard on this for a while and from what I can pick up on Discord it seems that node rewards are coming to NEM very soon. The new node reward system will replace the old supernode programme. I believe that the entry requirement is significantly lower than it was previously (10,000 rather than 3,000,000 XEM) which will make this accessible to most of us mere mortals, at current prices you could buy in for around $400. The rewards won’t make you rich but it will cover at least some of the costs of running a NEM node and hopefully will encourage many of you to set one up. The new reward system will be temporary as I think that there will be block rewards (as seen in Symbol) coming at some point in the future.

It looks like you will be able to opt in to the programme using the NEM Wallet (mock-up below). So keep your eyes peeled over the coming weeks and if you don’t have one already then go set up a NEM node ready for launch!

Car mechanics using Symbol?!

Well, this is something new! Car mechanics using the Symbol blockchain? I didn’t see this one coming! 😁 According to Radio‘s post the system will store the vehicle’s maintenance history on the blockchain and they will also create a simple blockchain-based loyalty card system. So, if you live near this garage go book your car in for a service!

The sages of Symbol work their magic 🧙

I’ve seen snippets about this on Twitter but wasn’t sure of the exact details. XEMBook posted on Discord yesterday to clarify what he and Toshi had been up to. These incredibly talented wise men of the Symbol community have been working to create the infrastructure to allow Symbol to be used in a multitude of programming languages. So far they have been able to make transfer transactions using PHP, Rust, Golang, Dart, Ruby and C#! I still don’t see my old language of choice Perl in the list but I am sure nobody uses this anymore 😂

They are now experimenting with implementing additional functionality and building in a variety of transaction types. This is pretty awesome, it opens the door for developers to work with Symbol and not be tied down to a specific programming language. Well done guys! 😊

Tracking treasury spends

I think that someone started making a treasury tracker in the past but I don’t know if they completed it or if it worked correctly as it doesn’t seem to be around anymore. Klim, Angel and quasarblue have been working to put this right and create a tool that will track spending from both NEM and Symbol treasury funds and display the transactions on the XYM City Discord. This is now significantly less complicated than pre-forks since all of the funds are in one pot rather than spread around multiple addresses which were harder to track 🕵️

They currently have a quest open where you can donate to the development so go check it out and maybe make a donation.

Thanks!

OK, that’s it from me today. Tomorrow I am flying off with the family for a week to a Greek island and relaxing (well after the inevitable trauma of getting through the car journey, airport and flight with a two-year-old – wish me luck! 😬). I’ll be back again soon with another update, captains don’t make me work on my holiday and make any big announcements, please! 😁
