13 Aug Symbol blockchain news update – 13/08/21
Well it’s Friday 13th and so far so good here. Hope that your day is going well and you have some fun things planned for the weekend! I seem to have a lot on so there may not be a post tomorrow, rest assured that I will be back with more Symbol Blog news soon though 😁 Anyway, we have a few things to get through today so let’s get started!
NEMHub to close
Thanks @FaizulReza1 for sending in this translation of a @TrendStream tweet. Looking at Discord I see that the news is official although I haven’t actually seen it posted in English yet. NEMHub will be shutting up shop later this month, in a way I think it is a shame as it did have potential but it was clear (at least to me) that the system was broken. The algorithm seemed to be massively biased and there were rarely any community tasks listed so it didn’t really fulfil its purpose. I really hope that we can replace it with a better system, maybe this will come in the future. I know that there have been some Discord discussions about this recently so if you have the skills to develop this on Symbol then maybe you can build it and get rewarded through the new quadratic funding model.
Edit.. Maybe shouldn’t have reported on this news as I don’t think that it was meant to be public yet (sorry Hatchet!). It was picked up on already on Twitter so I guess I am just doing my job and reporting on it.. 😁 Here’s the original source with translation:

@h_gocchi DAOMaker will be releasing an official statement shortly that they will be shutting down NEMHub at the end of August. They are looking into rebranding it to be available for all protocols, but I do not officially speak for them, so they may change their mind.
Out of respect and out of consideration for DAOMaker, I’m going to wait until they make it official. Are you okay with that?
Summary:
So I guess that it is not 100% confirmed but looks extremely likely. I hope that we can replace it with a better system anyway so maybe it is a good thing in the long run..

I love this idea! 😊 If your son or daughter is sitting at home bored in the summer holidays then why not encourage them to start coding? Developing a simple Symbol app is a great challenge. I wonder if anyone would volunteer to make some YouTube videos or guides to help kids (and adults) get started with Symbol development? I am camera shy so I am not going to volunteer 🙈
My son is only 1 so he has a while to go before I can teach him to code, but I will!
Get building with Symbol!
Seems that @nembear is practicing what he preaches 😊 He developed a simple application to send a tomato mosaic when three identical numbers were selected in the panel in the video below. I guess it’s a bit like a slot machine but more of a game of skill trying to stop on the same numbers each time.
When the three numbers match a transaction is sent. I am not sure who they get sent to but you can see that the transaction is completed in the Symbol wallet.

I am not sure when the Tomatina event starts this year, I should really work on something for the event. If I don’t make it this year then I will definitely develop something for next year..

I saw this post from @EUFjZEyIuzS9rIi whilst scrolling through Twitter today. It seems that they have developed a prototype system called “Symbol ATM”. This can read an encrypted private key from a printed QR code which enables the users to send money from the card securely to any specified address using the application. I don’t know the full details but if I find out more then I will let you know! 😊

I saw this tweet from @yutasoCrypto this morning and had to report on it! His coffeeshop knows how to make a seriously impressive cappuccino! The cats are awesome! (sorry I am a huge cat fanatic 😻). Also you will notice the Symbol logo at the top of the cup! The cups and saucers are also pretty fancy, and is that a silver spoon? ☕️

XYM supply
Like XEM there is one short of 9 billion coins issued in total. It kind of bugs me that it is not a round 9 billion but I am slightly OCD 😁 Unlike XEM the initial supply is lower, this is due to the fact that a large chunk of XYM is used to fund the harvesting rewards we all love. Over time the rewards will decrease and the total supply will increase until eventually all coins are in circulation.
