25 Nov Symbol blockchain news update – 25/11/21
Seems that Twitter is pretty quiet today. There was some speculation since a “deposit” button has apparently appeared for Symbol on Binance but I wouldn’t get your hopes up too much 😆It will come but I don’t think that you can take this as a sign that listing is imminent (I’d love it if I was wrong though!) 😁I do wonder though how many hundreds of millions of XYM are still sitting in Binance waiting for people to lazy to withdraw that will be sold if/when trading goes live..
Argh, I try to avoid talking about Binance listings and I have indirectly done this two days in a row – apologies.. I will get on with today’s Symbol Blog update now, there isn’t much to cover but I have to keep you guys up to date and nag you all about upgrading your nodes don’t I?
Harlock update
OK I will get this over with now: Upgrade your NEM nodes to v0.6.100 ASAP!
We have slightly less than 5 days left now so it is imperative that you upgrade your nodes and for delegates to harvest on nodes supporting the new fork.
The numbers are looking better than yesterday but there is still a long way to go. Let’s get this done and then you will get a break from me, and everyone else on Twitter, talking about node updates. Well until the next Symbol release anyway 😁

My shower thoughts are usually more of a blind panic thinking of all the stuff I have to get done in the day and making a mental list of how and when I will tackle them 😭Anyway, Hatchet has had her thinking cap on again and is debating proof of stake. It’s an interesting thread so give it a read. I like that her view is that PoS+ is closer to PoW than pure PoS. I would say that in its current incarnation it would be PoS in all but name but maybe there are changes afoot here or maybe I am misunderstanding and actually Hatchet is referring to running a node as “work” and receiving rewards for doing so?
I think that the tweet below is equally true (probably more so) for Symbol. I have a feeling Hatchet is well aware of this but it probably isn’t cool for her to explicitly state what I am going to below 😅
Allnodes hosts a huge number of Symbol nodes I don’t know how their setup works or if there is a single point of failure but we saw how they had a huge impact on the Cyprus fork recently where they initially upgraded all of their nodes to support the fork and then later downgraded them all again and asked their customers to decide themselves whether they wanted to support it. If this had been done at the last minute then it would have been game over for Cyprus and to have so much power concentrated in one place is always dangerous and it certainly doesn’t scream decentralisation. To be fair they worked very quickly and they provide a good service I think but should around 60% of all Symbol nodes be hosted on Allnodes? Probably not.
Symbol baseballs!
This is super cool. I have never actually played a game of baseball in my life, it’s not really big here in the UK (and I am also not big on sport). I did go to a batting cage in Tokyo at 3:00am whilst extremely inebriated once and managed to hit a couple of shots, maybe I would have done better if I was sober 😁My wife managed to get hit in the ass by most of the balls on her turn, not quite sure how she managed it but I have a hilarious video that I would love to post but really shouldn’t 😂I am sure we were a source of amusement for the locals anyway..
I went off on a complete tangent there – so Symbol baseballs! Would love to get my hands on one of these even if it is becomes a decorative object in my hands.

Just a friendly reminder to check into XYM City once in a while. Luckily Tresto has been more vigilant than me and picked out this gem and posted on Twitter – how cool are these logos?! 🤩
Garush
This prompted me to have a quick dig around and looking at the Garush channel it seems like things are progressing. There is even a dedicated Garush testnet and explorer set up where you can see transactions containing image data being sent. Sure it would be possible to regenerate the images from the transactions, according to Discord chat it appears to be done in a different way to Gimre’s method but might be fun to try to investigate further.
Ooh, actually it seems that there is a skeleton system already set up (and accessible – not sure if it is meant to be!) – you can access it here 😮
Just need the cool front end and a few bells and whistles and it’s job done right? 😁
