30 Jul Symbol blockchain news update – 31/07/21
Welcome to Saturday’s Symbol Blog news update! We have quite a bit to cover for a weekend post so I better get started!
New platform built on Symbol!
So I don’t know a whole lot about this project but looking at their website it seems to allow customised ad production connecting creators with small businesses from around the world. It appears to be good for the advertiser since it lowers costs outsourcing to creators worldwide and good for the creators as it connects them with larger markets and potentially more income.
So, it looks like they are holding an ICO so I want to say now that I am not endorsing this product in any way. Do your own research and all that, I think that many of us were burnt a few years ago with the whole ICO craze so go find out more and make your own mind up.
Tokens
Anyway, although they are building the platform on Symbol, they will be issuing ERC-20 tokens on the Ethereum blockchain. This kind of sucks and I wasn’t sure why they were doing this until I had a quick scan of their whitepaper. It seems that this is a deliberate move and was done to give additional liquidity to buyers. It is likely they will be able to get their token listed on external exchanges more quickly than if they were to issue tokens as Symbol mosaics as the infrastructure is there to easily integrate new ERC-20 tokens. If I remember rightly I think that they say if mosaic listings become more widespread on exchanges (once they have integrated this functionality) then they may do a token swap from ERC-20 token to Symbol mosaic. I am sure as Symbol grows that this will happen. With all of the subChain’s that will come I think it must be inevitable.

Haha, thanks @SamiurR76186237 for this @TrendStream tweet. Totally agree with this – Symbol needs exposure outside of our little crypto clique that is the NEM community. Once we raise awareness, attract new users, developers and interest then we will be unstoppable! Personally I am very optimistic about the future, it will take time but we will get there. As I have said before, we need you the community to help out, spread the word, share your knowledge and work for the common cause!
Learning to program with Symbol!
Thanks @Niashabid17 for sending in this tweet from @ftakao2007. I also agree with your opinion on this. We have been trying to publish some beginners guides to programming with Symbol on the blog as I think that it is important to encourage new people to have a go (I am learning this as I go along too!). We will continue to translate these guides from Japanese to English – as I don’t speak Japanese I have an easier time translating the code! 😆
I think that it is really valuable as it not only helps you learn to code and gives you interesting examples to work with. If you have ever learnt to program from a book or using online examples it can be very dull, as we are all Symbol fans it gives us that extra level of interest and motivation. Also you get to learn much more about the technical details of e.g. aggregate transactions or gives you useful tools to monitor your harvesting income over time.
Challenge
So here’s the challenge for you: if you are beginning to learn to program with Symbol in Python, Javascript or whatever language then let people know. Tweet about it or if you could then let us know and we can publish your code and a walkthrough of what it does on the blog! If we do this then we can attract more people to take their first steps programming with Symbol and we may find that this grows into bigger things that help the whole ecosystem grow.
Cool things on Discord
I hope that you are all using Discord and visiting XYMcity by now but if you are not then make sure you try it! As @DjCellBlock points out you can find out exactly what is going on and what the team are working on, with daily updates and discussions.
I wanted to write a post about the intriguingly titled “Project Kairos” as I have been piecing together information from the channel for a while – here’s a teaser for you 🤩 Maybe I will wait to try to learn a little more first though and bring you some facts rather than my interpretation of the nuggets of information I have picked up so far.
And just looking through today you can see some space pirate related concept art. The new website is going to look amazing! Can’t wait to get rid of the lifeless corporate image that the Symbol website currently conveys 😆
There are also a ton of more technical discussions, progress updates from the team, memes, chat, a helpdesk and a lot of other fun stuff. I had never really used Discord until XYMcity was founded and now I love it!
I will be honest, I was worried about the future direction of Symbol shortly after launch but now I have never been more confident that we are on the road to success. Hatchet you are a fine captain and it is an honour to sail with you!
