05 Oct Symbol blockchain news update – 05/10/22
Good morning! Hope that you are all well! 😊 It’s been a week since my last post so I thought I better open the blog and get writing!
Getting down to business
Well, this is novel! I am not 100% sure whether it’s completely necessary but it’s cool nonetheless. @grapenejp have created a system for making on-chain business cards using Symbol!
I don’t think that the application is publicly available yet but there is a video showing the interface and how to create a business card below:
EDIT: Thank you to the author of the tool for letting me know that the link is available and that you can use the business card creation tool already! The link is here and it even has an English translation button!
And a link to an example business card as viewed in NFT-Drive Explorer here. It looks like it is possible to automatically translate from Japanese to English which is pretty cool and something that you couldn’t do with physical cards (although dual text or double-sided would probably do the job). Anyway, very nice – good job guys! 😊
Opening Line interview
So this article is in Japanese but contains an interview with Kazuya Okada the Technical Director of Opening Line who according to the article aims to apply blockchain technology in fields such as manufacturing, security, healthcare, nursing, welfare, and education. In the article, he explains why they are committed to using NEM and Symbol versus other alternatives which is always nice to hear 😊
In the article, he explains the importance of blockchain education and details some of the outreach activities that the company has run in schools in Japan and also describes their Juggle application. I reported briefly on this in the past but it seems to be a collaboration with LAC, a large cyber security company in Japan. At the time I didn’t know the details but it appears to be a file-sharing application which allows data to be securely encrypted using the recipient’s public key and the sender’s private key. Juggle stores the data, and records the encrypted decryption key on the Symbol blockchain. The encrypted file can then only be opened by the intended recipient with the necessary credentials, preventing it from being accessed by an unscrupulous party.
The company has also been selected for the “Green Life Points” project, run by the Japanese Ministry of the Environment. It seems that the company are building a platform to promote environmentally friendly agriculture, aiming to reduce the amount of CO2 released into the environment by cutting down on food miles and promoting the use of local produce as well as the adoption of cultivation methods that use renewable energy at the production stage. It seems that the system currently under development will give points rewards to those that sign up for the project when they are environmentally responsible.
There is a lot more content in the article so if you are interested then please give it a read (Google Translate, as always, is your friend here). Finally, they are also looking to hire Symbol developers, I know there is a lot of talent out there in the Japanese community so maybe it’s worth checking out!
Symbols keep falling on my head
It’s that time of year again. The weather is getting cold, wet and windy and the umbrellas are coming out. If you want to stand out from the crowd then this is the ultimate fashion accessory – a Symbol and NEM umbrella! I love it! Where can I get one?! 😁
Symbol on a Switch?!?
What is this witchcraft?! I have no idea what this is all about but it looks like @EUFjZEyIuzS9rIi has managed to send 10 XYM to a Nintendo Switch using NFTDriveEX! 😂 It is about time my PS5 had its own Symbol address! 😁
Shop ’til you drop
I think that @subarumanSP has gone for a haircut. Why is this Symbol Blog news? Well, he paid using XYM and has written an article about the process! I discovered @kotopapa8‘s site “Everyday Symbol” through this tweet and it’s great! There are lots of articles on venues and websites that accept Symbol payment so if you want a haircut, a bite to eat or a beer and you want to pay in XYM then this is the site for you!
Community spaces
I was going to advertise Symbol-Community.com in today’s post but Gimre kind of beat me to it. The site was created by the Japanese community but it’s in English and it provides a novice’s guide to Symbol including links to useful resources. Guys if you would like a hand tidying up the English a little (believe it or not I am a native speaker 😁) then I would be happy to help!
It sounds from Gimre’s tweet that someone was getting upset about there being multiple community resources out there. My advice is to go take a look and expand your options. The more places we can shout about Symbol and NEM the better.
And it looks like there could be a change in the pipeline with the Discord server being split into a more developer focussed area and the other focused more on chat and community. I agree that the current Discord server is a bit of a beast with lots of channels and a million threads so it probably makes sense.
Thanks
Thanks again for reading. I’ll be back again soon with another update and hopefully, an article or two, need to get the boss’s permission first though 😅
I’m a Symbol and NEM enthusiast and run this blog to try to grow awareness of the platform in the English-speaking world. If you have any Symbol news you would like me to report on or you have an article that you would like to publish then please let me know!
