31 Aug Symbol blockchain news update 31/08/21
Hey everyone, it’s Tuesday and I am back at work both in my day job and with Symbol Blog after the back holiday weekend here in England. I spotted a few nice stories on Twitter this morning so will get started with today’s news update 😊
Beautiful NFTs
I spotted this post by @mahorobart about the release of their new NFT, the title of which (automated translation!) is “Awn Moon”. You can see how it was created in the cool video below. As usual the artwork looks amazing and all of their previous work has sold out. If you are interested in owning this work then keep a close eye on their nember.art page as the new NFT will be listed at around 21:00 JST.
Rosetta and Coinbase
I spotted this translation of a @TrendStream tweet by @SamiurR76186237. It seems we agree on this point and, as I also discussed in my recent post about Rosetta integration, I would love to see this done for Symbol before NIS1. It does seem to make sense in terms of Symbol being the flagship product for NEM and also with NIS1 becoming a sub chain of Symbol why implement this in Rosetta first? I am guessing that XEM will benefit greatly from a Coinbase listing in terms of price whilst Symbol will lag further behind. Should we really be opening XEM up to a larger user base and then telling them that actually Symbol is the new improved chain that we are focussing on going forward? 🤔
I think that the reasoning behind working on integrating NIS1 first is that it is a simpler process but that isn’t necessarily a good justification, maybe tackling the harder problem first would be the best approach?
Shin Kuma Node Support
@nembear has distributed latest Shin Kuma node support funding to interesting Symbol projects. You can read the report on NEMLOG but it seems like this week’s recipients are @monakaXYMnodeJP and Opening Line, Ltd.
Monaka-san created a tool for the Symbol Tomatina event which allowed the atomic swap of tomato mosaics and DHP blockchain mosaic. Atomic swaps allow exchange of crypto assets native to different chains to be exchanged without relying on a third party (e.g. an exchange platform) and this is pretty cool!
Opening Line were rewarded for their services in running several Symbol testnet nodes which are essential for testing and development on the Symbol blockchain. These guys are providing this service to everyone a their own expense. Without people/companies like this tools such as NFT-Drive and general activities such as writing code to interact with the Symbol blockchain on testnet would not be possible so thank you from all of us! 😊
New wallet releases
This is a heads-up that there will be a new Symbol wallet release, I am guessing that it will probably happen today and we will be sure to share the hell out of it on Twitter so watch this space! 😁
Symbol-DNS
Congrats to @yclaw1015 for completing his proof of concept for a decentralised DNS system on the Symbol blockchain. I haven’t used it yet but when I get time I will test it out and might write an article about it.
Singing the praises of the moderators
You may have spotted that @OliverMuldoon has been making lots of posts about the Community Managers recently and encouraging you guys to delegate to their nodes. They (like me) don’t receive any financial compensation for what they do and so Oliver is trying to convince you, the community, to delegate to node owners that give something back to the community. This doesn’t necessarily have to be a CM but if someone is doing something that you think brings value to the ecosystem by e.g. developing on Symbol, moderating (or any other activity!) then please consider harvesting with them.
Thanks
As always, thank you for reading! I have probably missed lots of stories so do let me know if I have and I can include them in the next update. I better get on and do my day job now as otherwise I will be working until bedtime tonight 😬
I’m a Symbol and NEM enthusiast and run this blog to try to grow awareness of the platform in the English-speaking world. If you have any Symbol news you would like me to report on or you have an article that you would like to publish then please let me know!
