29 Sep Symbol blockchain news update – 29/09/21
It’s Wednesday already and I really should be concentrating on my day job but Twitter (or more accurately Hatchet) has been on fire overnight so I wanted to bring you up to date whilst I have the chance.
Beating the scammers
You may remember from yesterday’s post that there is a scam going around where aggregate bonded transactions are being sent to unsuspecting users in the hope that they will sign and authorise the transaction, if they do then funds are sent from the victim to the attacker. Obviously it is the recipient’s responsibility to check the transaction and choose not to sign it but it could be confusing to less experienced users. To try to address this it seems that a wallet hotfix is being worked on as we speak, presumably to highlight the transaction details and warn the user before they unwittingly sign something.
As I said yesterday, be really careful, do not sign any transaction you weren’t expecting and always read and understand what you are being asked to sign. Just like in real life if you have to sign a contract. If you leave the transaction unsigned it will expire and the attacker will lose the 10 XYM deposit that they paid to initiate the aggregate transaction so they end up losing money. If this happens every time then it will cost them money and hopefully this issue will go away as it is unprofitable for the criminals involved.
Wallet updates
Whilst we are on the topic of wallet updates it looks like Symbol desktop wallet release 1.0.7 will be published very soon. Right, now it is time for the Hatchet show! 😁
Symbol Twitter Space with Hatchet
When I read this at 5:00am this morning I thought it would be Hatchet and the other captains doing a live Twitter Space but I think that she is stepping up to go solo and communicate with the community. This is really brave, I don’t think I would like to do this!
Personally I think that this is an amazing idea and a fantastic opportunity for us. She will be taking a live Q&A so if you have any burning questions then you will have the opportunity to get a direct answer from one of the captains. She will also keep us updated on what is happening and what is currently being developed. I for one will be tuning in and I think that it will be an incredibly popular feature.
If you have any feedback on preferred time zones then let Hatchet know in the thread – I think it has to be at a time that works for the largest community (Japan) but I would love it if it was a sensible time in Europe too. It is going to be impossible to please everyone though!
Oh also if anyone can provide a live translation to Japanese, again let Hatchet know!
Ah maybe I didn’t dream it @Jaguar0625 and @NCOSIGIMCITYNRE may join for a quarterly update – nice! I wonder what the elusive pair sound like in real life 😁 EDIT: Hatchet has just told me it will be text chat only in the quarterly sessions, the mystery remains..
The science of subchains
This excites me. I was a big fan of the concept of subchains on Symbol when it was first proposed but it seems now that the idea has taken a step closer to becoming a reality.
It is great to see members of other communities coming together for a bit of intellectual discussion too. I guess this shows that members from other communities are also excited about the idea which is always a good sign.
And Hatchet maybe things are different in the maths/computer science field but getting a paper written in a few weeks is no easy task – good luck!
Blog love ❤️
Always nice to get a mention (thank you!) I also didn’t realise that we had a Japanese counterpart @UcchinCrypto who has started his own daily updates on Symbol news. Great work – I admire your drive, it can be exhausting! 😁 Maybe we need to join forces in a @UcchinCrypto / @blog_symbol crossover ep 😊
Also some nice ideas on expanding the user experience for our blogs..
Would love to see a physical issue. Wish I had the luxury of devoting more time to the blog and develop some cool ideas (and do some proper well researched writing). For now it is the day job and security that wins out though, maybe in a few years I will be writing full time from my tropical island when Symbol takes off 😁
Maybe after Christmas when things calm down a little I will try to get some more time in the day to develop the site and implement some new ideas. Looks like I have a New Year’s resolution set already.. I am starting to feel that this could and should grow beyond the hour or so max a day that I devote to it.
The epic thread
I think that this started in response to a @TrendStream tweet but I kind of lost track 😊 please read through the thread yourself as there is some gold in there.
As a poor summary:
- Organic growth = good, paid advertising & sponsorship = bad (didn’t NEM sponsor a basketball team? 😆).
- Speculators = bad, users = good (speculators lead to boom and bust and harder for exchange listings)
- We need to build on Symbol. More transactions = good, more fees, more usage, attracts more people
- Hype = bad, hype attracts speculators in it for a quick buck (they also cry and attack the project if they don’t get it)
- Technology = good – how can we make life better with Symbol?
- We need a community with passion and a variety of skills
- BUILD, BUILD and more BUILD
And just so you know the captains are in it for the community and the technology. I am sure that the intellectual challenge and fun of coming up with cool new ideas comes in there somewhere too.
And here’s something for those of you that need some inspiration and motivation to get involved. Your contributions do not go unnoticed. It is a nice feeling to know that it is appreciated, so if you can help, even if you think it is in a small way it might be bigger than you think.
The curve ………………………….. Symbol
Will leave you with this tweet..
Don’t worry, I needed the explainer too 😆
There are things that Symbol does very well, we need people to develop on Symbol and use those strengths. If Symbol is the right tool for a job then people should be using it, I have a feeling we will see a lot more development on Symbol than we ever saw with NEM and I hope that as the wider crypto community start seeing cool things built that awareness will grow and growth will snowball. I am an optimist but I can’t help but think that we have a bright future ahead of us. We as community members are also ahead of the curve right now, carve out your niches!
Man in (early) 40’s tries to make an NFT
It finally happened. I felt like an old person using tech. I set myself a challenge of writing a quick article about nember.art yesterday and making my first NFT. I kind of succeeded but was thwarted by Chrome autocomplete and generally being really careless in my rush to get it done. You can read about it here.. 🤦♂️
Thanks!
OK, I have written enough and really need to get some work done! As always, thanks for reading and we will be back again with more news soon. Maybe I will have some time to write something longer at the weekend as thanks to that genius idea of Brexit there is a fuel shortage here and my car is out of petrol therefore I will be stranded at home.
Also, I don’t usually say this but if you are looking for a place to harvest then please consider my node xymharvesting.net
I’m a Symbol and NEM enthusiast and run this blog to try to grow awareness of the platform in the English-speaking world. If you have any Symbol news you would like me to report on or you have an article that you would like to publish then please let me know!
