28 Sep Symbol blockchain news update – 28/09/21
Hey everyone, I am struggling for new stories to report on recently so daily posts are out of the window. I am appealing to you guys to drop me a DM or email or tag me in an interesting post and I will try to include it in my updates. I am sure that I am missing things at the moment and I don’t want to be so help me out please! 😁
Hang in there
I retweeted this thread from Hatchet yesterday but here it is again in full. It makes me feel a bit uneasy to be honest. This is pure speculation but I am assuming this is to do with the negotiations with the Trust and that things are not going well. It makes me really angry that there is a reluctance to give the team what they are asking for and what they need. It seems from the forum post and previous responses from @gimre that the Trust are not telling the full story. As the negotiations are confidential we don’t get to see what is going on behind closed doors (typical of NEM past) so I can’t give any further comment.
Back to the thread..
First of all there seems to now be a realisation from the team that NEM/Symbol needs to be handed back to the community and that it should not be solely in the hands of a centralised team of developers.
Thankfully this is a longer term goal though. It is fine in theory but at the moment if the developers were to up and leave then I just don’t know what would happen to the project. I don’t think that we have a big enough community with the technical skills and passion to push Symbol forward forward at this point in time.
Our community needs to change for the better, I see this beginning to happen (very slowly) but there is obviously some resistance to change from a minority(?) of the old guard. We are a relatively small community with a large geographical bias, how do we attract new people and get them excited about Symbol? We need to start solving this problem and soon but the answer has so far been elusive.
I think that it frustrates us all that we don’t have the superstar community you see in some other projects. I guess with NEM not being open source and Symbol being new and relatively unknown in the wider crypto community at the moment, it is to be expected. I hope that this will change in time and there are certainly members of the Japanese community with the skills to contribute to Symbol development.
If you can help then we need you..
The tweet below is my worry too and I am very happy that despite whatever is going on behind the scenes with the Trust and NGL that you guys are still all here and fighting for Symbol. It angers me that there is so much politics going on and that some individuals are acting on self interest rather than the greater good. It is short sighted, if you push away that creators and talent and piss off the community then you are going to end up killing the project for everyone.
FYI – 生き甲斐 (Ikigai) “a reason for being”.
I for one am sick and tired of the drama that we have seen over the last 4 or 5 years. I am very happy with the current captains and feel that they are the best people to sail us to a brighter future. My view: f**k those that are acting in their own self interests. Give the team what they need to succeed and stop dragging your heels and playing politics. You are exhausting the devs and upsetting the community who are watching the future of their passion (and their stashes 😁) being used in a game of Russian roulette. It’s not cool..
I am guessing from the post above that this week is some sort of crunch time. It doesn’t sound so encouraging which is disheartening, I really hope that there is a silver lining in sight.
I strongly echo the last statement. Do your best for Symbol, if you are reading this then you obviously believe that it has a bright future. Let’s contribute however we can and support our developers and their vision for the future. We lived through the leadership of the Lon Wong days, the Foundation and the Trust. Did they deliver? Did they always act in the best interests of NEM and Symbol and the community?
It is time to put Symbol in control of the people that created it, they should own the project whilst it is in its infancy as they are the people that know what needs to be done in the short/medium term. Once Symbol has stronger foundations it can be put into the hands of the community where it ultimately belongs.
Rant over..
And hang in there Hatchet, it seems that there is a resolution (be it good or bad) in sight. Hopefully after this rebuilding/celebrations can begin. ❤️
Logo design
OK, back to some lighter news.. @CMXEYM has published an updated logo design and it looks cool! I am not a big fan of the “From NEM” tagline that has been used in the past but I do like the logo. I am not sure how this fits with the current branding and website. I feel like if a new logo was adopted now there would have to be a lot of work done behind the scenes to update designs. I really hope that we will see the new website very soon. I think it is scheduled for October so it should be here anytime now..
Symbol directory
I received an invite from @symboldapp to list Symbol Blog on Symbol directory yesterday. It is a web directory built on Symbol that allows you to list your Symbol related website free of charge. You fill in your site details and a QR code is generated. You then import this into your Symbol wallet and send an empty transaction. Then I think your site is moderated to make sure that it is suitable and finally listed on the site. Once the site is listed people can leave a review that is linked to their Symbol wallet address.
It’s pretty cool and would make a good central repository of Symbol related sites so I urge you to submit your websites so that the world can see all of the cool things being built on (and about) Symbol.
I have also asked if @symboldapp would like to make a guest post on the blog to explain the Symbol Dapp Framework I have seen it but haven’t made a post as I don’t understand it well enough to write about it myself 😁
Don’t get scammed
Late news in.. There are reports of aggregate transactions being sent to random (or targeted) addresses requiring the recipient’s signature. Just a warning do not sign a transaction that you have no knowledge of. The attacker can set up an aggregate transaction requesting all of your XYM be sent to them, obviously you have a agree to do this and sign the transaction. Don’t be caught out and sign random transactions as you could lose all of your funds. If you just leave the transaction it will expire (and the sender will lose their 10 XYM deposit) so it will cost them money.
Gimre articles
Another late news item. If you are looking for some excellently written technical articles then check out gimre’s GitHub page. I hope to see some more articles appear in the future, I usually have to read them many times and google things I don’t understand but they are definitely educational and entertaining.
Thanks!
Thanks guys for reading and apologies for the rant (and speculation) I try to avoid both usually but I am short of news at the moment and needed to fill a post 😁 Opinions expressed above are my own and I don’t have any more information than anyone else so take my interpretation of Hatchet’s tweet thread with a pinch of salt. It could be about something completely different!
We will be back again with another post as soon as I have enough news to write about. Please if you think I should be reporting on something then let me know!
I’m a Symbol and NEM enthusiast and run this blog to try to grow awareness of the platform in the English-speaking world. If you have any Symbol news you would like me to report on or you have an article that you would like to publish then please let me know!
