28 Jan Symbol blockchain news update – 28/01/22
What a great day! It’s Friday for one (and payday for me!) but more importantly than that there seems to be a ton of good news stories for Symbol and NEM. I wasn’t going to post today but how could I not with all of this juicy news to report on!
The big news story
Well, we knew that this was on the cards already but today it is official! Valkyrie now has oversight of the NEM and Symbol treasury funds. It is big news for us and it is also headline news for the larger crypto community – we even got a write up on CoinDesk 😁 It’s great to see that treasury funds will be properly scrutinised, something that wasn’t always the case with previous incarnations of NEM management. As reported in the CoinDesk article, funds are held in a 5 of 7 multisig account with Valkyrie controlling four signatures and the core devs (Jaguar, Gimre and Hatchet) controlling the other three (meaning that approval from both Valkyrie and core devs are required to move funds).
Leading the way
I think that everybody in the community is very excited about the future of subChains on Symbol but it looks like the concept is gaining interest from outside too. Really nice to see that people are taking notice of what the team are doing and engaging in discussions. This will probably be something we won’t see rolling out for a while as it is not an easy problem to solve but I will be following the chats on Discord and will try to keep you updated.
Symnity feature updates
Symnity is an interface for connecting Unity to the Symbol blockchain developed by @toshiya_ma. He has updated the codebase to include support for Secret Lock & Secret Proof transactions. I am waiting for the flood of new games that make use of the Symbol blockchain!
Symbol hits the bigtime!
Another thing that I’ve been waiting (too long) to see. Symbol now has a top 100 listing on CoinMarketCap!
And shortly after this happened we saw Symbol overtake NEM – they are sticking closely to one another for now. I am sure that we will see them climb up the leaderboard over the coming months. When top 10? 🧐
OpenApostille
Looks like the mainnet release of Symbol OpenApostille is now live. I reported on the testnet version and provide some more details here. Unfortunately I am not sure if there is any documentation in English and the website is a little strange as (at least for me) it shows some text in English and some in Japanese. Will keep you updated if I spot a guide in English. I am sure that this will be in the pipeline.
Fantastic February
Hatchet has written her list of jobs to tackle in February and it looks to be an exciting month. I notice that “finish blog post” is not on the list. The “???” and “profit” is intriguing – will have to wait to see how that turns out 🤔 Oh, I thought that the “???” was something exciting but it turns out I don’t know my meme (thank you Jaguar for the tip off) 😂
Will we see the new nem.io website launched? I hope so but I know that Hatchet can be optimistic with timescales 😁

I wrote a very brief article last night on the Symbol miscellaneous repository on GitHub. I urge you all to go dig around here and elsewhere and see what you can find. If I get some free time I will continue to nose around and maybe write something longer and more interesting.
Symbol supper
I am not sure if this is a curry or a stew but it does look delicious! I am adding a food-based Symbol post or tweet on my blog to-do list. Need to think of some ideas 🤔
