25 Aug Symbol blockchain news update 26/08/21
Hey everyone, welcome to Thursday’s edition of the Symbol Blog news update! Tomatina is over for another year but I think good fun was had by all, I still have a tomato or two in various wallets ๐ I was going to include more about it in today’s news but I was a bit overwhelmed with the number of posts on Twitter. Hopefully one of our Japanese friends will write up a summary and I can summarise it for you on the blog.
NFT Mania
So I generally keep my opinions to myself regarding NFTs. I think it is kind of cool to support artists on platforms such as nember.art and I have nothing against digital collectables. I really like the idea of playing traditional trading card games digitally using NFTs – is this a thing yet? People have spent a ton of money on postage stamps or Pokemon cards so I get that rare can mean valuable.
I guess what I don’t understand is the top end of the market where NFTs are selling for hundreds of thousands or even millions of dollars. I know that there are opposing views on this (see below for @Jaguar0625‘s take on @Melt_Dem‘s tweets) but I am definitely in the camp of thinking it’s a little crazy! Will these NFTs hold their value like great masterpieces? Personally I don’t think so, but I suppose time will tell. If there are enough people out there that want them and they have deep enough pockets then they will, simple supply and demand.
People buy yachts they don’t use, spend thousands on luxuries they don’t need why shouldn’t they punt more than many of us will earn in a lifetime ๐ฌ on essentially nothing? Maybe this is just the way that crypto millionaires flaunt their wealth. NFT status symbols – who would have thought it..
As another example, there are only 42 units of this coin [https://t.co/hIKu5SDrcG], but its price is only double BTC.

Scarcity != Value
Just to let you know though @Jaguar0625, there is a market for celebrity ๐ฉ (at least in South Park). Maybe celebrity microbiomes will be the next big thing ๐
Pretty easy. If you own a physical piece of art, you control who can view it. If you own a digital piece of art, you don't.

There is clearly a difference between an imperfect replica (e.g. photo of a painting) and a perfect replica (e.g. digital copy). https://t.co/XOKpeTGORC
I for one would rather have an original painting hanging on my wall than a NFT sitting in a wallet (ideally I would just like the cash and not have to work ๐). Maybe I am showing my age being a Xennial though, sorry to all the Gen Z readers! ๐
Oh my word, looks like I talked this one up – was just scrolling through Twitter to find some more news and I saw this:

It was only a matter of time (and licensing)..
Get involved!
I nearly missed this one but it is an important tweet from @LeonRedinger. If you would like to get involved and be more active in the Symbol community then send him a message. I fell into running this blog by accident after exchanging some messages with @OliverMuldoon and I have really enjoyed writing it. I didn’t ever think I would be writing for fun but I guess if you feel passionately about a topic it isn’t the chore that it usually is.
I am sure that Leon will be happy to answer any questions and I can tell you that the Community Managers are a great bunch of volunteers. We all want to work towards the common goal of promoting Symbol and it is true, we are all learning new skills so you will get something useful from the experience! In fact I need to write up a blog post about how the CMs have been learning to code in Python – I will try get this done soon!
Some of the things "Community Managers" have been doing & learning:

Python, Github, WordPress, spreadsheets, node hosting, web servers, writing skills, graphic design, animations, computer/crypto history, and so much more.
I would also like to chime in and say if you want to help Symbol Blog by contributing an article I would really appreciate it!
I love writing @blog_symbol but it would be lovely to see some community contributions. We all have different expertise, knowledge and opinions so if youโd like to write an article for the blog then let me know. It would be great to get some more diversity in what we publish..

I played this game made by @mikunNEM to stock up my tomato mosaics. He sent me the code to run on my computer as it was written in Python and had some dependencies. I am still really impressed he wrote this after only starting to learn Python a couple of weeks earlier ๐
