24 Mar Symbol blockchain news update – 24/03/22
Hi everyone, I hope that your week is going well! I am back with another Symbol Blog update after a few days’ break – really need some more news to report on, it is a little slow at the moment compared to usual, maybe it is because Hatchet is on a Twitter break – come back, we miss you! 😁
Metaverse Evolution
I am struggling with the Japanese here but what is obvious to me is that @nemchan_nel‘s Bishōjo character (featuring a NEM logo hairclip) has been published on the cover of a physical book that is available in Japanese bookstores. If Google Translate serves me well the book is titled “Metaverse Evolution” and obviously is about the metaverse, how technology is changing, and how it will continue to evolve and become part of our lives in the future.
Great to see Nemchan on the cover of a book. I wonder if she has a sister – we need a Symbol character too!
XYM and XEM get the green light!
I spotted @nembear‘s tweet yesterday and good news! Both XYM and XEM have been put on the cryptocurrency “green list” in Japan.
There is a CoinTelegraph post about what this means in practice but in summary, it means that Japanese exchanges can list these assets without all of the red tape involved in getting approval from the Japan Virtual and Crypto Assets Exchange Association (JVCEA). This should mean that we see Symbol being listed on more Japanese exchanges in the future which is great to see. It also acts as a bit of a validation of Symbol and NEM as I guess that they are seen as important and legitimate projects in Japan. As we know they are immensely popular, when will the rest of the world catch on?
Bitflyer
And whilst we are on the topic of exchange listings, more good news! Bitflyer will be distributing XYM to those that held XEM at the time of the snapshot (better late than never!) so I should imagine we will see some new harvesters joining us shortly. The even better news is that they will be listing XYM in the near future! It seems that there is no clear date for this but I am assuming from the post that it will not be today but sometime very soon.
As you probably already know, BitFlyer is a big exchange and is ranked 14th on CoinMarketCap with a 24-hour volume of $131,470,914. Very nice to see some of the big boys taking notice of us. When Binance? 😂
EDIT: It seems it is listed already! Plus there is a competition running for Japanese traders:
And as Tresto points out they are using the old logo 🤦♂️
NFT to frame
This is super cool! @yasudagabou is sending a physical copy of the artwork that he created as an NFT and sending it to the winning COMSA bidder! If you have read the blog for a while you will know that I don’t really get why you would want an NFT. I love the artwork being created but I would much prefer to hang it on a wall than keep it in my wallet 😁 I think that if everyone did this then I would definitely be buying some NFTs. I guess shipping from Japan would not be an option for me though 😭
New NEM NanoWallet release
I feel like this should have been better announced – this is why we have an announcement section on Discord right? Anyway, I spotted this tweet from @mikunNEM which shows a new release of NanoWallet which solves recent issues with Trezor access. If you were having problems accessing your wallet via a Trezor device then you will want to download this!
Emojis
Has Hatchet returned from exile? She’s back this morning with this tweet – get involved, we need an official emoji for Symbol and NEM. I can’t think of anything that would fit better than this 🏴☠️ but you might be more creative – leave a comment on Hatchet’s post.
Save our nodes
So I think that there was some heated discussion on Twitter about nodes and the huge disparity in the number of harvesters and the total importance between them. If you look at @ahikicoin‘s (very excellent) Symbol Node List you will see that some nodes are massive with tens of millions of XYM harvesting on them whereas others are unable to cover their hosting costs due to too few delegates. This has long been a bone of contention, we want to see lots of nodes but if you can’t cover the running cost then there is very little incentive to do so.
As I have written before, I am a great believer in delegating to nodes whose owners contribute to the ecosystem, I kind of despise kickback nodes (sorry I know it is controversial) but to me, it makes sense to support nodes that give something back to Symbol rather than putting a few extra XYM In your pocket each time you harvest.
Anyway, everyone has their own opinion on this matter but I think that it is important to maintain the number of Symbol nodes and to support those that are contributing to the ecosystem. @ahikicoin has set up a new view on his website that lists nodes who’s owners are most active on Twitter but have a low importance. You can find the list here.
There are a lot of other factors to consider here and I know that the matter of node resources has been mentioned before. With the rise of on-chain NFTs it is important as a node owner that you don’t just opt for the cheapest server configuration. I expect that disk space will become an issue over the next year or two so if you have a bargain-basement setup this could cause you problems later down the line.
The Tower Symbol anniversary winners
So I hope that you all had a go at playing @toshiya_ma‘s The Tower. If you did so during the competition period then you may get a pleasant surprise! The top 10 ranked players have now been announced and will be getting a prize in the near future. I am gobsmacked by the high score table. All of the players completed at least 1,000 levels! That is absolutely insane! I managed 51(?) I think and I thought that was good going 😂 Congrats to all of the hardcore Tower explorers – that really is amazing 👏
If you didn’t make it into the top 10 then don’t worry, there are other prizes – I think there will be a prize draw for players that completed at least 5 floors and apparently there was a poetry prize too! The winners of these categories will be announced in the coming days.
Keep up the good work!
I love @s_kma_live‘s cute bear character. He announces the XYM price and daily percentage change each day and it looks like yesterday he was working hard lifting some weights. Let’s do our best as a community, keep working hard and hopefully, we will see the bear go from strength to strength 😊
Thanks!
Thanks for reading, I will be back soon (hopefully) but you need to feed me with some news to report on! If you are a regular reader then please consider harvesting on my node xymharvesting.net to those that do already – your support is greatly appreciated!
I’m a Symbol and NEM enthusiast and run this blog to try to grow awareness of the platform in the English-speaking world. If you have any Symbol news you would like me to report on or you have an article that you would like to publish then please let me know!
