20 Jan Symbol blockchain news update – 20/01/22
Hi everyone, hope that you are well and life is good! 😊 It’s lunchtime here so I have just enough time (hopefully) for a quick break to write today’s Symbol Blog update.
On-chain NFTs – a harvesters dream
It looks like the winner of the NFT-Drive auction has received his NFT which has been immortalised on the Symbol mainnet. If you look at the transaction you will that there was a nice income for the lucky harvester. and node beneficiary (it wasn’t me unfortunately 😞 – maybe next time). I was actually surprised that the total fee was so low 157.45 XYM seems a pretty reasonable price to pay to store your artwork forever.
Node locations
Gimre posted this literally the second after I had hit the “publish” button on today’s post but I thought it was important to include so here I am typing again!
The thread is about the geographical locations of Symbol nodes and apparently, it is not that diverse. My node is running in Lithuania even though I am based in the UK, why? Because it was good value for money considering the server specifications. I guess that there is also a problem with a very high number of nodes being hosted with a single provider (Allnodes) which isn’t ideal.
The upshot is that we need nodes running in diverse geographic locations so if you are thinking about setting one up or moving nodes then have a look at the map and see if you can host your servers in a country that isn’t already represented.
I also like the idea of setting a node up on my desktop machine although it does mean I would have to keep it running 24/7 which may not be so appealing.
One other issue with the current node distribution is that there is a massive wealth inequality which makes it unprofitable for most people to set up and run a new node. Not sure whether there is a solution for this and I am sure that many people would run a node at a loss for the good of the network (I run a testnet node for this reason) but it seems that we are at a saturation point and node numbers have plateaued or even declined slightly recently. Without incentives, it may be hard to grow the network further, maybe this will change in the future as the number of users grows though.

Nice to see Symbol community members sending each other gifts in the mail 😊 It looks like @RadioRa26841511 sent some Symbol branded merch to @GeranKlim all the way from Japan. I am not sure exactly what the package contains but it looks like there are some facemasks and a mug from the photos. I am slightly jealous Klim 😁
Arcana in English
It looks like Arcana will be available in English very soon! I can’t wait to try it out, I thought it was already available on iOS but I have been searching daily this week and I still can’t see it. Either I am searching the App Store wrong or it is coming soon. I will definitely be checking it out as soon as I can, maybe I can write a blog post on setup and features once I get my hands on it.
Ah – I spotted this later tweet. Is it done already? Why can’t I get it on my iPhone yet? 😭

A cryptic tweet from Hatchet but I am assuming that there could be some kind of announcement on the horizon here? Don’t leave us in suspense please – I want to know what this refers to! I hope you haven’t joined our old buddies at Milo Croton Limited 😂
Bitcoin celeb
As you probably already know Hatchet is OhGodAGirl‘s Symbol and NEM alter-ego and it looks like she will be taking her Symbol hat off temporarily and speaking at the Bitcoin2022 conference in April. I wonder if this will be streamed as I would like to watch it, I’ve not seen Kristy talk before. Hahaha, “chaos creator” that sounds about right! 😁
VTuber needed
I kind of guessed what a VTuber was from the tweet context but I have to admit I had to look it up and check. I’m so out of touch, when did this happen to me? 😞 Anyway, if you can make a Hatchet persona then let her know. This would be super cool and I would love to see it done! I like the idea myself, I am not keen on cameras (obviously as I am too good looking and don’t want this to distract viewers from my content) maybe this would be a way of diversifying and starting a video blog with news updates.
First Japan and then the world!
This would be great to see – XYM the unofficial second currency of Japan. I am still keen on writing a blog post where I try to survive spending only XYM for 24 hours in Tokyo but by the time I actually get to travel this will probably be too easy as the number of venues accepting XYM continues to increase 😁 I could be off to Osaka myself in December, there was a conference that I wanted to go to but it was cancelled the last two years due to COVID. I will see if I can get there in 2022.
