19 Sep Symbol blockchain news update – 19/09/21 (QUEST Sunday)
It’s the Symbol Blog Sunday update and it’s a little busier than usual for a weekend. Pandora’s Box has been opened and we urge you to give your view on what should happen with the NEM Official Twitter account..
The NEM Official Twitter account
I warned you that this was coming in the last Symbol Blog article 😉. Now that the @NEMofficial account (with 371.8K followers!) is back up and running we need to decide what to do with it.
@Hatchet would favour migrating the NEM Official account (with all followers) to @Symbol (or similar) and making it Symbol specific. A second official account would then be set up for NEM related content.
For those of you that prefer a diagrammatic representation @TrendStream has illustrated what this would look like (thank you!) 😊
Another option is to keep the NEM Official account for NEM and set up a new Symbol account. Finally, there is the option to keep everything as is and mix NEM and Symbol content on the existing account.
I know what I would prefer, considering that Symbol is the flagship product and needs to be promoted, but you guys can have your say in this community sentiment survey. Please cast your vote!
Pirate treasure..
Any self-respecting pirate needs a stash of gold dubloons and @sakamotometal might be able to help you out. There are some super cool gold Symbol and NEM coins available so go check them out at their online store (treasure chest not included).
Python SDK update
Well this is a bit of a pain. If you are following any of our Python guides that are using the Symbol SDK then they may be broken already. In version 1.0.3 “sym” has been replaced with “symbol” for example symbolchain.core.sym.KeyPair
becomes symbolchain.core.symbol.KeyPair
it is a small change (and easy fix) but you need to be aware of this otherwise you will be scratching your heads wondering why the hell that stupid code in the Symbol Blog article doesn’t work! 🤬
New incentives for voting nodes?
Not 100% sure what incentives @Jaguar0625 has in mind here but I am guessing it is for voting nodes as this was mentioned in the post mortem from the hard fork. If this applies to you then congratulations for being rich already and it sounds like you may be earning even more rewards soon. Are there plans to lower the balance cap on voting nodes and share some of these rewards with some of us bottom dwellers? 😁 Would be cool to see some additional incentives trickle down to some of the other (non-super) nodes, I guess this might be wishful thinking though 😆
QUEST Sunday
OK, sorry guys I am massively short of time today and have been working (on a Sunday 😓 for the last 10 hours) trying to catch up with work for tomorrow so it is a very short QUEST roundup this week (but I have a few more stories above to balance it out I think).
Here are a couple of projects that caught my eye this week..
Python app
This is an intentionally vague but intriguing quest from @nabe3 from Symbol Minecraft fame who will be making a Symbol related app in Python. I like surprises so gave a small boost. Will be keeping an eye on this as I have a good feeling about it. He will publish an article on it too so might have a try at translating if it is code based.
Symbol extension for Google Chrome
QUEST user Subaru is developing a Google Chrome wallet extension for Symbol! He wanted to do this to make using Symbol and sending and receiving XYM more accessible. Anyone can download a Chrome extension and get started so this is pretty cool – good luck! 😊
Thanks 😁
Thanks for reading, and for the likes and follows on Twitter (we broke 400 followers yesterday 💪). I am trying my best to keep up with the blog but free time is really scarce at the moment so there may be some days without updates over the coming weeks until things calm down a little.
XYM I am counting on you so I can quit my job and do something I actually enjoy 🤞 This is pretty accurate:
I’m a Symbol and NEM enthusiast and run this blog to try to grow awareness of the platform in the English-speaking world. If you have any Symbol news you would like me to report on or you have an article that you would like to publish then please let me know!
