18 Apr Symbol blockchain news update โ 18/04/22
Hope that you had a good Easter break (if you got one that is). We are inundated with chocolate eggs and I am trying to exercise some self-control ๐ฌ I was supposed to get this post out last night so apologies for the delay, life has been busy, too busy!
Valkyrie newsletter
The March edition of the Valkyrie Symbol/NEM newsletter was released on Friday and if you haven’t seen it yet then give it a read! There are some interesting stats on social engagements along with some chart analysis ๐ from Valkyrie’s Head of Research. You can download the pdf here so make sure you give it a read!
I also noticed that there were some links to Symbol Blog posts in the Community News section too – thanks Annie! ๐
Satoshi’s lesson
So don’t try to read this from the screenshot above – check out the original post on BitcoinTalk instead. Why am I posting it? What does Satoshi Nakamoto have to do with NEM and Symbol? I’d love to reveal in a Symbol Blog exclusive that the core devs are actually Satoshi but alas no, there’s no scoop here (but then I can’t rule it out either ๐). The moral of the story above is that Satoshi was successful because not only did he have a killer idea but he worked incredibly hard to develop it.
“Satoshi’s lesson is that you don’t need to be the next Einstein in order to change the world. Nor do you need to have much money, or influence with the world’s “movers & shakers”. You just need to put in the effort. Satoshi, probably just an ordinary hobbyist like anyone here, saw that something was lacking in the Universe, and he fought tooth-and-nail for 2+ years until this imperfection was corrected. This is what makes Satoshi and his work my greatest inspiration.”
Having a good idea is the “easy” part, I still struggle with this but on the rare occasions where I think I have hit on something I never have the ambition to try to develop it further. It’s easy to come up with excuses, I am full of them (work, family, time, money, etc, etc) it is always easier not to do something than to go at it head on and try to change the world. Big ideas can be daunting, implementing them can be exhausting and frustrating but the satisfaction of creating something that you are proud of is priceless. You don’t need to be the next Einstein to create something groundbreaking, 90% of it is just plain hard work and dedication and that’s something that all of us have equal potential for.
Yes, I know, we can’t all be legends who will go down in the history books but we can all put in that extra effort to get something off the ground. This is another call out to the community. For all of you budding developers out there thinking of building something on Symbol, go for it! You won’t lose anything by trying and if you dare to persevere you could create something wonderful (and if you’re lucky something that will make you rich! ๐). Whatever happens, you will earn a ton of respect from your peers and best of all you will have seen your idea come to life rather than being discarded as just another interesting thought.
For those of you like me, who lack ideas and/or skills ๐ don’t worry – you can still help! We can all do something to contribute – think about what you can do even if it is “just” tweeting about Symbol (or NEM) and showing the world that you are proud to be part of the project and all of the community achievements. Get involved in discussions, learn and be part of something rather than sitting on the sidelines.
Also, I am going to go into my favourite rant again.. I think most of you will agree that there are far too many people holding Symbol and sitting back waiting for someone else to make them rich. If everyone thought this way then the project would instantly be dead and really it is not fair to let someone else do all of the heavy lifting and not pitch in. If you are one of these people, you are putting your own financial future in someone else’s hands. It baffles me how people can hold (often very significant amounts) of XYM or XEM and not contribute and then have the audacity to complain about a lack of progress. The developers and the community are not working for you. You do not pay them to do a job. They are not answerable to you.
Publicly complaining about lack of progress whilst giving nothing back does not help your cause. Even if you look at it in a purely selfish way, you are essentially doing your best to kill the value of your own holdings by spreading negative sentiment. I always say this but just give everyone some time, we the community need time to grow and the team needs time to make their ideas a reality. As we learnt from Satoshi’s lesson, it takes an immense amount of hard work and a significant amount of time to research and implement a big idea. If you are expecting miracles, do yourself (and the rest of us) a favour and just move on.
For those of you that are in it for the long haul then let’s work together as a team, dream big and work hard, we don’t have to be Einsteins we just need to roll our sleeves up and get cracking – don’t let the haters (or the charts) get you down ๐
Symbol payments
It looks like there were two different events held in Japan yesterday with stalls accepting XYM payment! The first was Sakura Fest in Yokohama and by the looks of it there were many familiar faces in attendance.
The second event was CBD Japan Market which was held in Shibuya Tokyo and I think nemicon was in attendance and accepting XYM payments!
On-chain NFTs Ethereum vs Symbol
This is an interesting thread from Tresto comparing the challenges of on-chain NFTs on the Ethereum network versus using Symbol. I didn’t know this but apparently it would cost around 1,000,000 JPY (or $7,900) in gas fees to create an Ethereum on-chain NFT! ๐ฌ In addition, the maximum storage size available is a measly 46.8Kb. In comparison, it costs around 200 XYM ($22) per megabyte(!) to store data on the Symbol chain. The bottom line is that Symbol has a niche here that really needs to be advertised to the world, we can do things that just would not be possible using other existing technologies.
Eternal memories
@atomos_seed has started a new business called Heartlog which allows you to store your precious memories on the Symbol blockchain. You can record important moments in your life as images, videos, audio and text as NFTs. They offer baby naming calligraphy as well as services for recording wedding, anniversary and pet memories on the blockchain. They also have an English site coming soon which I will report on when it is ready! ๐
Selling artefacts in The Tower
This is cool! A legendary item has been sold for 10 XYM directly in The Tower game. There is an in-game exchange so get playing and collecting and you never know you might find an item that you can exchange for some real-world money ๐
Victory!
Congrats to @umesetu2011 for winning an official GT7 championship race in a Symbol x Valkyrie designed car. I love these designs! ๐
Symbol Style
I will leave you with this one, as it brought a smile to my face – here are the Captains going full Gangnam style and I love it! ๐
Thanks!
Thanks for reading today’s post! I still have a backlog of news to get through and I need to catch up on what happened in the MEXC AMA today so I will likely be back tomorrow or Wednesday with another update!
