Symbol blockchain news update โ€“ 07/11/21

Oh man, it’s very nearly Monday again and I have a lot of work to catch up on ๐Ÿ˜ฌ. Hopefully I will get some time to keep up with some regular Symbol Blog posting next week but we will see. I will definitely be annoying you all on Twitter by nagging you to update your NEM and Symbol nodes whatever happens.

Hatchet’s guide to the forks (and everything else you may be confused about!)

I highly recommend reading this very long tweet thread from Hatchet. If you have any questions about the forks, why this is needed or what comes next then this is the place to learn more. I was really tempted to write it all up as a blog post but I would basically be copying and pasting the contents of the thread so I may cover just a few points in more detail in a future post. Hopefully if you had any doubts about the current goings on then reading this will put you at ease.

Hatchet, if you want I can just give you a login to the blog and whenever you have anything that you want to write about you can post here.. I know that you prefer Twitter but it would be great to get some guest posts as I see from your tweets you are a fan ๐Ÿ˜

Symbol Blog also got a mention which is always appreciated! โค๏ธ Also as always cudos to @UcchinCrypto too ๐Ÿ˜Š

I really struggled to keep up with what was going on with NEM/Symbol in the past and there wasn’t a great single source of information about what was happening in the community (at least not in English) so I am attempting to put that right. I have a way to go but at least it’s a start. I have to admit, it is also completely in my interests to spread the word as I want Symbol to do well. If it does gain traction then eventually I get to quit work and do something fun (maybe even write the blog full time). I urge you all to tweet more, write more and talk to people – spread the word, it’s not that hard and by doing this we can grow our community and bring in new talent.

Fork update

So as of around 22:30 UTC on Sunday 7th November 2021 these are the current figures for nodes supporting the Cyprus and Harlock forks.

Cyprus: 68.3%

Cyprus fork support – https://symbol-tools.com/symbolTools/view/tool/nodeList.html

Harlock: 30.2%

Harlock Support – https://nemnodes.org/nodes/

It looks to me like Cyprus is pretty much in the bag now (yes I like to count my chickens before they are hatched ๐Ÿฃ). Harlock worries me slightly as the numbers are still low but it is also still early days. Also, on the plus side I believe it only requires a 51% majority. It doesn’t help that Binance run 30 nodes and I am not sure what their stance is, will they want to get involved? Does their vote count? If they remain neutral and don’t upgrade then it will be more of an uphill struggle..

It would be interesting to know whether some NEM node owners are against NEM becoming a subChain of Symbol. I also wonder whether the news got out to all of the node owners now the the NEM Forum is no more (that seemed to me to attract the more old school NEMbers). Maybe people are a bit blasรฉ about the whole thing as the deadline is not until ~18th-19th? I hope that we will see the numbers pick up and that Harlock is successful. Otherwise I am not sure where this leaves NEM in the longer term.

Confirmation that the Trust are supportive

Thank you @XymNiko for providing confirmation that the Trust has agreed to the vote. I think that this is important as there was some misunderstanding and/or misinformation in some parts of the community about this. I am really glad that the Trust have been vocal about being onboard and are willing to go with the community decision. It really is all down to us now, our vote will shape what happens next. I strongly believe that Cyprus and Harlock are the way to go but please get informed and then make up your own mind. I think you will see that really there is only one option if we are to succeed going forward.

Shop local with Symbol

I think that Joel is based in the Philippines judging by the flag but have no idea where his store is actually located. @aquino_aquino13 happy to update this post with a Google Map location if you would like. It’s really great to see more stores accepting XYM (and XEM) payments, I hope that this trend will continue to spread, still waiting UK… Come on there must be someone out there accepting XYM payments now? If anyone knows of any UK venues that do then let me know and I will go check them out and write them up for the blog.

Analogue Symbol Wallet

Haha, I love this! Probably not great for storing your XYM unless you carry your Ledger around in it but it is kind of cool ๐Ÿ˜ Maybe I should get my wife on for Christmas ๐Ÿค”

Thanks

Thanks for reading, was another short one today but will hopefully be back soon with another update. Remember to upgrade your NEM and Symbol nodes!! That’s my reminder done for the day – now I can go to bed and get some sleep! Goodnight everyone – will be back again soon..
