05 Aug Symbol blockchain news update – 05/08/21

Hi everyone and welcome to Thursday’s edition of the Symbol Blog news update! It’s the 5th August so happy birthday to me! 🥳 Another year older but probably not wiser 😬 I was supposed to be going out for a fancy meal but as I still(!) can’t taste or smell anything after my brush with COVID those plans are now on hold 😭

Looking on the bright side though, it seems we are getting some love from the community which is great! It is really nice to see that people are enjoying the blog and I appreciate the should out @LeonRedinger! Also a big thanks to everyone else that has given encouragement and feedback over the last month or so since the site has been up and running!

Cranking up the flywheel

Thanks @eikcimickie for sending in this translation of a @nembear tweet. The Japanese community have worked tirelessly promoting NEM for years and nembear comments that development on NIS1 was slow to say the least.

This has changed with Symbol. We are starting to see new applications built on Symbol, people are writing and sharing technical articles. We have community translators and writers that are starting to spread the word to the rest of the world. The network is strong, we have far more Symbol nodes now than we ever had on NIS1.

We are decentralised and we are getting stronger. I feel like there is a real buzz to Symbol at the moment and I have high hopes for the future. We still have a long way to go still but it makes me happy to see that there is passion, knowledge and drive in the community. We will continue to grow stronger there will be no stopping the network flywheel (mentioned here if you don’t know what I am talking about) once it builds momentum 😊

QUEST

For those of you that missed the previous report about QUEST this is a condensed summary for you translated by @alediemmee. It is a really cool concept, viewers can reward streamers in XYM based on successful completion of a “quest” which is a challenge that the streamer sets themselves. If they complete the quest successfully then they receive rewards pledged by viewers which are held in escrow until after completion. If the viewers confirm by vote that the task was successfully completed then the streamer will receive the rewards.

If you haven’t seen it already then go have a look! It is already active on testnet and will be launched on mainnet later this month.

@QUESTofficial5 allows you to give $XYM to projects called "quests". the strong point is that money are not given to the executor until the quest is completed. The completion of a quest is approved by a vote. https://t.co/HMKyR5Uz85

Also I completely agree with this tweet from @NCOSIGIMCITYNRE – I had the same thoughts when I was reporting on this in a previous post.

2. if performer "picks" the quest, it should be locked (and with some small fee) – so that multiple people won't do same quest in parallel
3. if quest failed, let someone else "pick" it and re-attempt 🙂

The XYMbassadors learn Python

The XYMbassadors over on the community-managers channel on XYMcity Discord are all learning Python in a drive to grow their technical knowledge. I think that this is a great idea! Coding can be a lot of fun and is a lifelong skill for those that master the basics. Good work XYMbassadors! 👍

Congratulations on your first steps and good luck with the course!

I have also been learning a bit of Python recently just to understand and explain the translations that I have been working on. I have a fair bit of experience coding in another language though so I think I have an unfair advantage there. It’s still frustrating for me in terms of syntax and having to google everything still though! 😆

@OliverMuldoon is also delving into cryptography. Anyone else brave enough to take on crypto 101? If you do then let Oliver know! I did have a read and the concepts and coding aspects I am fine with. I just realised that my level of maths knowledge is next to zero and I cannot for the life of me read equations 😭 This is something I need to fix so I am buying myself an A-level maths book to bring myself up to somewhere near passable standards.
