02 Oct Symbol blockchain news update โ 02/10/21
It’s the weekend! I need to get this article written, get some coffee and then get out and try to find some fuel. It’s all gotten a bit Mad Max here at petrol stations so wish me luck! ๐ฌ
The Jaguar comes to life
I love this, there are some amazing designs flying around at the moment and I think this might be my favourite (I prefer the right image by the way).
This completes the captain’s set:
I am really excited to see the website(!!!), it is going to be super cool and it looks like there will be Easter eggs galore. I love the book titles and I spot @cryptoBeliever_ and @h_gocchi in this one:
@takasaki_bc is hunting for treasure here:
There may also be some good news if you are a prominent community member. You might be getting a custom avatar after the website launch! Want one, must post more.. ๐ I am looking forward to seeing space pirate wolf..
Frustration
Again, I am guessing here but as a betting man I would wager 1000 XYM that it is regarding negotiations with NEM Trust. Remember them? The group with a greater than 80% disapproval rate from the community at time of writing? No? I don’t blame you, I don’t know much about them either. Please for the sake of the community, yourselves and the developers stop dragging your heels, let’s move forward.
Hmm.. But then again maybe @gimre has gone all AI on us though and it doesn’t mean anything at all.. There is a GPT3 hashtag on this one.. ๐ค
Now all I can think of are NEMatodes ๐ชฑ๐ชฑ๐ชฑ๐ชฑ
Mining for sentiment
I am not going to repeat the entire thread but this is pretty cool. Computers are really good at trawling through lots of data and finding patterns that it would take humans a crazy long time to find themselves. Hatchet has now been able implement a system to mine the NEM Telegram groups entire histories to produce a numerical sentiment score. Using these data we can overlay news events and price history to see what sparked joy, or pain, in the community at a given point in time.
This seems like an incredibly powerful tool. It will be really interesting to see what comes out. Personally I think that the peaks and troughs will be easy to call but I’m not so sure on the day to day stuff. There could be a lot of biases such as single posters that are really negative (or positive) spouting their opinions regularly over a period of time (you know the type) which might skew the results. Maybe this is already factored in though. Also perhaps the number of posts might lead to problems, e.g. a quiet week on Telegram would give a higher weighting to individual posts whereas at “moon time” there will a deluge of posts and posters. Maybe some kind of minimum post threshold is required. Also crypto specific terms will be absent from the lexicon so some tweaking might be needed.
I guess we will see – I am excited to see what comes out, I am a big nerd when it comes to playing with data (even if I am not the best at doing it) ๐ The more information the better so as XYMcity Discord takes off and the community at large grows the tool will get more powerful.
Get involved, but don’t be a dick
This thread from Hatchet contains a lot more information so read the whole thing! I wanted to pick up on this though as I have seen it happen many times and it is not nice. Here’s an important lesson that applies to the real world just as much as social media.
The team want to engage with the community. That’s what the community are crying out for too. There are some rules though, basically don’t be a dick. Trolling achieves nothing, don’t make yourself look like an idiot and ruin things for everyone else.
Engage. Constructive criticism and debate is OK. Personal insults, whining, threats etc are not. Just be nice – simple ๐
If you are passionate about Symbol and NEM then come be part of the community. Join us on XYMcity Discord, it’s a friendly place to be.
Don’t get scammed
I’ve said it before but I will say it again. Be careful, educate yourself, don’t sign aggregate transactions that you have no knowledge of. Here is a warning in both English and Japanese so that you don’t fall for the latest scam.
Living the life
Looks like @RadioRa26841511 has been spending some of his XYM harvest at 22cafe – cheers Radio! ๐ธLooks like you had a good time and enjoyed some good food (as well as the drinks) ๐
Symbol charm
@mikunNEM ran a competition from September 3rd – 30th to collect tweets showcasing the “charm of Symbol”. He received 70 entries and the prize was given to the tweet with the most likes. @HANABATA_KE made a video of the announcement of the results which you can see below ๐
Thanks!
Thanks for reading, I am off to get a coffee or two and start the day. Have a wonderful weekend, I’ll be back again soon with some more news on Symbol Blog ๐
