Symbol blockchain news update – 02/01/23

Good morning and happy New Year to all of you! It’s been a while since my last news update as I was in NEM/Symbol Advent Calendar mode for the latter half of December but I’m back now and will try to keep up with regular updates in 2023.

Ring of power

Better late than never, this was on my list of stories to cover on the blog but it is dated the 13th of December 😬 In the linked article @EUFjZEyIuzS9rIi shows you how to use near-field communication (NFC) to store an encrypted private key in a physical object (in this case a ring) which can then be used to access the holder’s XYM wallet and send transactions!

Also, if you are interested in NFC technology and its application to blockchain, there is another guide here on how to link your NFT to an NFC device.

Time to get hacking

Exciting! The 2023 NEMTUS Hackathon has been announced and is now open for submissions! There is a grand prize of 20,000 XYM and many other prizes up for grabs! The entry period closes on the 31st of January and the submission deadline is the 20th of March with winners announced in early April.

Undead aggregates 🧟

@hanatyan128 is at it again and this time he is back with another proof-of-concept for “aggregate undead transactions”. As you will probably already know, aggregate transactions have a deadline and require that all parties sign within the specified timeframe for the aggregate to successfully complete.

Deadlines for aggregates are short and if not completed within the designated window, will result in the transaction failing. The idea here is to create “immortal” aggregates which defy the usual time restrictions. In order to achieve this it looks like the tool creates a variety of aggregates signed by the creator with different time windows. The cosigner then chooses the transaction that falls within the current time period to sign and announce. Once a transaction is successful then no further transactions in the chain will be valid, thus avoiding the risk of exploitation of duplicate transactions.

DrugN alpha testing

I reported on DrugN back in September and it looks like they have been hard at work developing the system. They are recruiting alpha testers for the new system which is built on Symbol. I look forward to finding out more about the project in the future.

More atomic swaps

There have been several articles explaining how to implement cross-chain swaps using Symbol but perhaps this is the most comprehensive yet, showing transfer between Symbol and the following tokens:

  • Ethereum ⇄ Symbol
  • Ethereum ERC20 ⇄ Symbol
  • Ethereum ERC721 ⇄ Symbol
  • Polygon ⇄ Symbol
  • Polygon ERC20 ⇄ Symbol
  • JPYC ERC20 ⇄ Symbol

New Year, new you

I am definitely aware of the extra pounds that I have put on in 2022, sitting at home in front of a computer all day is probably not very healthy! 😁 If you are looking to get fit in 2023 then @choconaak‘s XYMFit might be the app for you. Get walking and earn some rewards!

Ahem.. 😳

@feiton81118 has created this interesting “game” where you pay 1 XYM to err.. interact(?) with the cutesy Christmas-themed character. I haven’t tested it myself but you can see what happens in the video below 🙈 The wonders of blockchain applications 😂

Thanks

Thanks again for reading, I’ll be back again soon and a final HAPPY NEW YEAR to all! Let’s hope that 2023 is an improvement on 2022! 😅
