XEM is a crypto asset (virtual currency) that has traditionally been very popular in Japan but perhaps has not had the global awareness of other assets such as Bitcoin and Ethereum. In March 2021 NEM Group launched an entirely new blockchain called Symbol which is already starting to gain global attention.

What is the new “Symbol” chain?

Symbol is an “enterprise-grade, next-generation blockchain” that has been in development for more than four years. Finally on the March 17th this year Symbol mainnet was officially launched, much to the excitement of the NEM community.

Symbol is a hybrid public/private blockchain which is touted to provide the “best of both worlds” to businesses and developers. If you are interested in finding out more about the technical details you can find a variety of useful resources to help you get started with Symbol.

Even though Symbol has only just been released the NEM Software team, led by @OhGodAGirl has been hiring new developers to implement an ambitious 3-year roadmap to ensure that Symbol remains at the forefront of technology in the crypto space.

Post launch growth

After the launch of Symbol, some big changes started to happen on Twitter and Telegram and there was a push to promote the new blockchain to the rest of the world. As Oliver Muldoon (@OliverMuldoon) of NEM Group tweeted, there are now resources for users and developers of Symbol in the top eight most spoken languages.

Of course, this list doesn’t even include Japanese (the current largest user base) and other languages where the NEM/Symbol communities are growing. Twitter, has made it possible to communicate @NEMofficial and other Symbol news effectively in English and Japanese. These tweets are being translated into a variety of other languages by community members. This is also one of the main aims of Symbol Blog – to translate and bring you news of interest.

Twitter

@NEMofficial is the official English language Twitter account and if you are not following it already then you really should be! This is the place to get all of the latest news and announcements as soon as they happen. For those of you who are not native English speakers, there are a variety of language specific NEM accounts where you will find translations and additional content specific to your regions.

Spanish

Arabic

Portuguese

Chinese

Russian

… to name but a few! It’s amazing how quickly the community is growing, especially considering how recently Symbol was launched.

Telegram

Twitter is great for keeping up with the latest news but we also have several language specific Telegram groups where you can ask questions and have a chat with other members of the Symbol community. Come join us, we are here to help and love a good discussion!

A BIG THANK YOU TO OUR JAPANESE COMMUNITY!

I hope that we have shown you that NEM/Symbol is accessible to all and that awareness is spreading rapidly. However, the Japanese community deserve a special mention here. They have pioneered the use of the technology and have been showing the world real use cases for NEM and Symbol.

They have also been working to get XYM accepted as a method of payment for goods and services. This cafe in Japan accepts XYM payments. The cup is designed by a community member Tresto and there are colourful NEM-designed candies too!

If you need to relax after a hard day there is also a business selling 100% natural origin Abies sachalinensis essential oil from Hokkaido Japan that accepts XYM payments!

There is so much going on in Japan at the moment and we are doing our best to translate these stories both on Twitter and here at Symbol Blog – if you want to help us then we would be eternally grateful!! 😀

So, thank you for your passion and dedication Japan! 🙇‍♂️It’s wonderful to see that even though there are some language barriers, it does not stop us from spreading awareness about NEM and Symbol. We as a community are strong when we work as a team.

THE COMMUNITY NEEDS YOU!

Finally I would just like to say that if you are a XYM (or XEM) holder please don’t hide away in the shadows. Get involved in the community, do your part in spreading the word about Symbol or have a go at developing new tools and resources if you are technically minded. If you hold XYM then it’s in your interests to do so, give something back to the community!

For further information about how to get involved, including links to all of NEM/Symbol social media outlets please check out the official website.
