Symbol blockchain news update – 10/10/21

Good morning world and welcome to another Symbol Blog news update! I have a busy day ahead and we have a lot to get through today so I better write fast and make a start (apologies for typos etc)! 😁 Also I won’t be able to do the usual Sunday QUEST update but I will try to have a look in the week and highlight some quests that catch my eye.

An important reminder

I think I have written about this pretty much every day over the last week or so but it seems like people are still falling for this aggregate transaction harvesting scam so here are two further warnings both in English and Japanese. Please, please educate yourselves and NEVER sign an aggregate transaction that you don’t understand!

Update on delegated harvesting

I urge you to read this thread from @Jaguar0625 in full but I will try to summarise some of the key points for you..

As it turns out it seems that some of the NGL nodes were accidently set up to harvest. These nodes have large importance scores and therefore probably raked in a decent chunk of XYM over the past six months or so, maybe I will check this when I have a bit more time but, not today though as I am on a tight schedule!

As a consequence of the mistake, these nodes will have harvesting disabled later this week and any accounts that are harvesting on the NGL nodes (they all begin “ngl-“) will be kicked off and will need to find a new node to harvest on. If you are harvesting on an NGL node then please make sure that you delegate to another node as soon as possible as these changes will happen next week!

As mentioned in the tweet thread. Please consider delegating to an active community member who is contributing to Symbol in some way. We work hard and it is always nice to know that we are appreciated. We receive some recognition and a small income from node rewards when you harvest a block with us. @Jaguar0625 mentions some community members in his tweet (including Symbol Blog!) but there are many other Symbol contributors out there that would appreciate your support too.

My message to you is, try give back to those doing something for Symbol rather than those spamming Twitter and your Symbol wallet with requests to harvest with them. In the end if you support those that are trying their best for the project it will encourage them to keep going and will benefit you in the long run.

Another interesting tweet in the thread shows the network harvesting power which has been consistently increasing over time. With the NGL nodes not harvesting I guess this will mean that we will be 7% more likely to harvest a block which is always a good thing!

Well done Japan 👏

I can’t sing the praises of our Japanese community enough (as you will know from reading the blog). It is encouraging to see that Hatchet who is familiar with the early days of Ethereum is drawing parallels between the Japanese Symbol community now and the early days of Ethereum.

I love the work coming out of Japan and the main reason for starting this blog was to showcase some of this creativity for the English speaking world. As it turns out though 50.2% of my readership is from Japan! 😁 It does mean that 49.8% of my readers are from the rest of the world though so that’s a good start in spreading the word!

So well done guys, I hope that we will see the explosive growth that Ethereum saw in the future too!

Whilst we are on the topic.. Here’s another interesting tweet, this time from @YutopianF. It shows that Symbol searches on Japanese Wikipedia are on the rise. In fact recently there have been more searches for Symbol (blue) on Japanese Wikipedia than for Ethereum (green)! Let’s hope that this trend continues, I really feel that momentum and excitement are starting to build. This really is just the beginning of something big and it will spread.

A tale of two polls

Again, this is a must read thread from @Jaguar0625 and it concerns the recent community sentiment poll on Twitter. As we reported previously the polls were almost certainly manipulated towards the end of voting to swing the results in favour of the NEM Trust and NGL. This is a real shame as the community wanted to make their views clear without any shadow of a doubt but if we just consider the votes before the rigging event it is clear what the consensus is about the Trust and NGL (in general we have a very negative sentiment).

Interestingly the Japanese community also held a poll which showed overwhelming dissatisfaction with NEM Trust. I think like me, most people have no idea who most of the Trust board are, what they do or why they are qualified to decide the future of Symbol and NEM.

XYM Payment

The number of venues accepting XYM (and the things that you can buy with it) continue to increase in Japan. Apparently you can now even get a Thai massage with your harvest income! It’s been a stressful week, I could do with one of these! 😁

@RadioRa26841511 seems to be living the highlife with his XYM harvest income at the moment – I always see pictures of wining and dining 😁 This tweet is no exception and if you are in the area then you can spend your hard earned XYM at 22 Café – please support them!

Next time I am in Tokyo I am going to set myself a challenge of surviving for a couple of days only spending XYM. I need an excuse to go back so that I can write an article on this so it might not be in the near future. I think it would be a lot of fun to try and a bit of an adventure for a foreigner who doesn’t speak any Japanese. I like a challenge 😁

Symbol Directory

We have featured Symbol Directory in the past but just as an update they now feature a “node” category where you can advertise your Symbol node to make the community aware that they can harvest with you. Hatchet had a great idea of getting Symbol community contributors to to list their nodes here. Then you can see which nodes support an individual or website that provides a service to the community and you can then choose to support your favourite.

I like this idea, the node list on Symbol-Tools.com is very good for node advertising but it would be great to have a place where project owners could list their nodes to try to encourage community support from delegation.

Also if you have any project built on Symbol (or know of something that you would like to share with the world) then I encourage you to list it on the site, you don’t need to be the owner to do this. It is really simple to do but just remember when you import the QR code to set up the transaction, set the fee to “slow” rather than the default zero fee otherwise the transaction will not go through.

It would be great if we could fill this directory out and then we would all have a comprehensive list of Symbol resources and be able to find out about projects that we had no idea existed. Maybe I can write some articles about them 😊

NEM Official Twitter updates

Interesting.. We reported previously that @NEMOfficial is now called “Symbol & NEM” but it seems that the logo has now been updated. I am taking this as a strong indication that the final logo design has (finally) been decided.

I thought exactly the same thing as @TrendStream when I saw it and wondered why it didn’t show the full logo.

However, I think maybe for Twitter it looks OK zoomed in? I don’t have a strong preference either way but if you do then please reply to Hatchet’s tweet above!

Thanks!

Thanks again for reading, I will be back soon with some more updates but will end it here for today. I need to get on with some work now and then will be trying to make some progress with the website redesign (it’s getting there) and article reformatting tonight. I remember when weekends meant free time, I miss those days 😆

Finally, if you are looking for a place to harvest then please consider my node xymharvesting.net 😊
