16 Oct Symbol blockchain news update – 16/10/23
Good afternoon readers! Hope that your day has been good and that you are easing into the new working week. I am writing this wrapped up in many layers and wearing fingerless gloves to type. It got cold here all of a sudden and wouldn’t you believe it, my heating broke as soon as it did 😭
NEMTUS in Spaaace!
NEMTUS was involved in the NASA Space Apps Challenge 2023 event in Yokohama. According to the tweet translation, it is an annual hackathon event run by NASA that challenges social issues using satellite observation and open data. It looks like they sponsored one of the prize categories but I am not sure if any of the hackathon entries actually used Symbol. It would be interesting to find out more.
Nemu at IGF 2023
Everyone’s favorite virtual girl nemchan_nel presented at the Internet Governance Forum Kyoto 2023 run by the United Nations. The talk explored life and identity in the metaverse and you can read more about it here. The presentation slides are available (and are in English) so go take a look!
DrugN launch
Not long to wait now. According to this tweet (or whatever you call tweets nowadays), DrugN will officially be submitted as Android and iOS apps by the end of this month and hopefully be available to download and use shortly after. I hope we see lots of people using it and some posts about it in the coming weeks.
XYMZAP
Looking to get fit and build some muscle but need some motivation? I am, so this could be the app for me! 😁 XYMZAP allows you to claim a reward mosaic for each workout session you perform. Apparently, it also sends a random message presumably some encouraging words to keep you motivated. You can get started straight away through the website – just enter your Symbol address and claim your hard-earned rewards!
Building on Symbol
Want to learn how to build a simple web application that integrates Symbol? Well, an event will be held on the 2nd of December (if I have interpreted the picture below correctly!) at GinzaScratch in Tokyo. If you’re a budding developer then this might be the event for you!
Expanding REST API results
There has been talk on Discord about the maximum number of results returned when querying a node using the REST API. The number is currently capped at 100 if I remember correctly but this article shows you how to increase this number. Presumably, it will put an extra load on your node but I am not sure how much of an issue this will be. By increasing the number of results returned it can allow those pulling data from REST queries to perform fewer requests and get results faster so in my book this is a good idea. I will try to remember to update my settings in the future.
Symbol Clock
Mikun has created a new NFT “Symbol Clock” which shows the current time along with the Symbol block height and finalisation height. It’s pretty cool! 😁 He has 100 copies but I am not sure if there are any left or not – might be worth requesting one if you haven’t done so already!
An Introduction to Juggle
I have written about Opening Line’s Juggle app in the past but not in any real detail. I did however spot this article which takes a more in-depth look at the technology and potential use cases. Obviously and as usual it is written in Japanese but it is easily automatically translated so if you want to know more about what Juggle is, how it uses Symbol technology, and what it can be used for then go have a look!
Pirate biographies
We’ve seen the fantastic artwork but what do the people behind the avatars do? With the crew growing there seems to be a desire from the community to know more about what the different team members do. Perhaps it is time we started writing some bios?
Thanks!
Thanks as usual for reading and apologies as usual for the lack of regular updates. I will be back again next week with another update I promise 🤞😁
I’m a Symbol and NEM enthusiast and run this blog to try to grow awareness of the platform in the English-speaking world. If you have any Symbol news you would like me to report on or you have an article that you would like to publish then please let me know!
