Symbol blockchain news update – 03/05/23

Good morning! It’s been a week since my last post and I just noticed that I have many items to get through today so, without further ado, here’s today’s edition of the Symbol Blog news update!

Symbol chats

This looks cool! Oleg has been working on an encrypted chat app that stores messages on the Symbol chain and can only be read by the sender and recipient. I guess if you want to ensure privacy and you want a decentralised and indelible chat record then you will be very excited about this. Obviously, there are fees involved in sending messages and storing these on chain so all messages sent will incur a small payment for network fees but I for one would be happy to shell out a few XYM to use it. Just have to encourage all my friends to set up a Symbol wallet 😁

Real TPS

I spotted this on Discord yesterday. It looks like there is a website called “Real TPS” which shows the actual number of transactions per second on a variety of different blockchains. Gimre and Jag have incorporated Symbol and NEM into the codebase and hopefully, these will be incorporated into the site soon. We don’t want to let the side down so get sending NEM and Symbol transactions to boost our score 😂

Hatchet hard at work

I am sure that Hatchet’s inbox is completely full with people sending information for the annual report so if you have information that you want to share then feel free to send it to me too as I am involved in writing the document and it saves Hatchet having to relay the messages to me anyway. Just a tip – if you could send a Google doc it makes it even easier as apparently you can’t copy and paste DMs.

Also excited to hear what the new development might be – let’s hope that it all goes through and there will be an announcement at some point soon 👀

PLTE fun

Gimre is up to his old tricks. This time using the new Python SDK to parse messages to check whether there is a PNG PLTE chunk and then if there is it can parse and display the output. Check out the webpage (links to code in the tweet). I am assuming that this could be adapted to check for the PNG header and then do the same for entire images(?) although as data would be sent across multiple aggregate transactions there would likely need to be some standardisation on how these transactions were sent and ordered.

I don’t know a lot about PNG format but you can do some cool things by changing the palette – these have identical image data but the PLTE chunk is swapped:

By the way, there are some interesting addresses involved in some of these PLTE transactions – someone should look at one of the recipients specifically in more detail 😂

😈😵‍💫 = ✝️🥚

Elon spoils our fun (again)

Boo, it looks like the Twitter API has been closed down which means that the Symbol Node List can no longer display the number of likes each node owner has received for Symbol-related posts. I expect that you can still access the API but like all things Twitter at the moment Elon wants you to pay him for the privilege – it’s a hard life being a multi-billionaire.

Get XYMFit

There is a new release of XYMFit available for download. Apparently, there are major changes and improvements in this version so go check it out!

Food glorious food

The Food NFT Consortium is holding a free event in Tokyo on the 30th of May entitled (at least in the automatic English translation) “Digital Revolution in the Food Industry”. If you are a local and have an interest in NFTs, food. or both then why not go along and show your support!

Immortal kitty

I thought this was cute 😻 Onem has made a short video featuring her cat Nemu-chan and stored it on chain using NFT-Drive. I should do this for my cats although all they ever do is sleep so it might not be a very exciting video! 😁

Symbol robots

I have posted about these before but it looks as though they are multiplying! I love them – there really is no end to the creative flair of the community. If you can put a Symbol logo on something then it has probably already been done. I want to see more examples of weird and wonderful Symbol themed things. If you have some that I haven’t featured already then let me know! 😊

A pirates lunch for me

Hehe, there’s a new special at Rasfriet, a pirate-themed, Symbol-branded, potato-based dish (so many hyphens) that only costs 100 XYM. I am in Tokyo from next weekend but I also want to visit 22 Cafe and Sandwich Factory and they are all in different areas so it probably won’t be possible. I don’t think my wife would be happy if I spent a whole day of our trip exploring places that accept Symbol payment. Although this has reminded me that I need to top up my mobile wallet before I go!

The Tower’s biggest fan

Just wow! Level 2400 of the Tower! This is actually insane 😂 I hope that he realises that there are an infinite number of levels 😁 Good work! It’s great to see a super fan, the game is amazing and more people should be playing it. I feel like this guy should get some kind of prize though – that is some serious dedication!

Thanks!

OK, that’s it from me today. Have a good week and don’t forget, if you have information that you would like to see in the annual report then send it to me as well and I will see if we can feature your contributions!
