Symbol blockchain news update – 13/12/22

Good morning world! I’m back with another short update on what has been happening in the world of Symbol and NEM. I have been immersed in advent calendars over the past two weeks and I really need to keep more of an eye on Twitter! Maybe this can be my new year’s resolution. Anyway, here is some of the news that I did see over the last 7 days, I hope that it will be of interest! 😊

‘Tis the season

Just another reminder, if you have any interest in the more technical side of Symbol and NEM or you want to see what cool ideas the community are working on then go check out the NEM / Symbol Advent Calendar on Qiita. Most of the articles are in Japanese (Google Translate works just fine) but there are some in English too. I am very lucky to have hosted a few posts on the blog so thank you to Jag (and soon to Anthony) for choosing to host your articles here! If anyone else wants to post an article on the blog then I would be more than happy to help with formatting etc.

I am thinking of a post-Christmas roundup of all of the articles on the blog. Maybe it’s a bit ambitious as there are a lot of them but I will see how it goes 😁

Smart transactions?!

Well, it looks like hanatyan128 has been busy! I reported on his recent work on Metal in a blog post last week and since then he has published a new proof-of-concept system for “smart transactions“. I haven’t tried this out yet but it looks like the basic concept is that code (compiled in WebAssembly) is stored on the blockchain as a unique Metal ID and can be executed to generate an aggregate transaction hash with a signature. These are then sent to the service provider, along with the Metal ID linked to the code and the parameters passed to execute the smart transaction in a message to the service provider. The service provider then executes the same code using the “call data” (Metal ID and parameters) sent by the customer signs the transaction, adds the customer’s signature and then executes the transaction.

As the Metal ID is unique, the smart transaction cannot be edited without causing the Metal ID to change and therefore is resistant to unscrupulous parties changing code to dupe users. If the service provider runs the code using different parameters to the customer then the transaction will be invalid and will fail. The system can be used if there is more than one customer (ie requiring more than two signatures) and is touted by the developer as a safer alternative to aggregate bonded transactions (also it avoids the requirement of the 10 XYM hash lock transaction).

At the moment the system is a proof-of-concept and will require a reasonably high level of technical knowledge along with expertise with wasm and Rust but I am betting that there will be tools to assist both users and deployers as the idea matures. It is really nice to see such inventiveness! 😊

The Tower 🏰

Wow! These are quite some stats! The Tower has racked up more than 175,000 transactions since its launch and has generated more than 4,300 XYM in fees! I have probably sent a few hundred transactions myself 😆 but it just shows how building apps and games increase network usage. I can’t wait to see what gets built in 2023!

Cross-chain swaps

Another article for my reading list! You guys are keeping me busy! Toshi recently published this piece on how to implement swaps between Symbol and Ethereum (and Polygon). It uses the Symbol secret lock/secret proof transactions along with Ethereum’s HashedTimeLock function. I haven’t read it in detail yet but may try to play along at home with this 😊

Prize winner!

Woohoo! 🥳 It looks like @feiton81118 won a prize for his blockchain shooting game, an NFT game stored on the Symbol chain, at TokyoWeb3FES! I don’t have any further details but congratulations – it was well deserved and it’s great to see some recognition coming to the Symbol community!

Get ready to get walking!

So I don’t know much about this game but I have featured it on the blog before. Symbol Walk is a move-to-earn game that’s (obviously from the name!) built on Symbol. I guess it is Japanese only but hopefully, it will be translated into English at some point. Anyway, it looks from this tweet like it is coming to iOS very soon and you will be able to earn XYM just by walking around! Sounds good to me, might get me away from the computer a bit more 😁

Winter Wonderland

I thought that I had seen it all but I never cease to be amazed by the Symbol-branded products out there! @HANABATA_KE is taking to the slopes with his new Symbol snowboard – very cool! 😎

Thanks!

OK, that’s it for me for today! Don’t forget to keep up with the advent calendar and I will be back soon with another update (and hopefully some other articles!).
