Good morning world! I’m back and I am playing catch-up with the news at the moment as I have been busily writing other things!
Metal on Symbol
I have just finished writing about Metal, hopefully, you will see the article sometime soon ๐ If you missed the news at the weekend then I’ll bring you up to speed. Metal for Symbol was created by the multitalented @hanatyan128 the creator of QUEST (article also written and coming soonTM).
The premise of Metal is to facilitate the storage and “deletion” of arbitrary data files on the Symbol blockchain. It achieves this goal through the use of metadata which Metal can write to an account, mosaic or namespace. The tool is command-line based and super easy to use, after “forging” your data you will get a metal ID and can use the tool to download and reassemble the file and can share this ID with others who can then do the same.
And, this is super cool! Toshi has already created a modified REST query that will retrieve, assemble and display files based on a Metal ID! That was fast work! Here it is in action – just change the Metal ID at the end of the URL to display your own data – I will give you one to start with: FeAGvuJjqeSGCvRybLNWRTR4JWrJaqNgDpNtmcPFEYUJF9 (I am cheap, so it’s a tiny image and it only cost 1.8 XYM in transaction fees ๐)
And it looks like XEMBook has already integrated Metal functionality into his Symbol Browserify package allowing you to write code to use Metal through the Chrome Developer Console directly in your browser! ๐คฏ
NEM/Symbol Advent Calendar
It’s day 7 of the Symbol Advent Calendar event which means that if you haven’t started reading yet then you have 14(!) articles to catch up on. I have been keeping Google Translate busy and following along and there really are some excellent articles so well done everyone, it’s great to see so much enthusiasm and creativity out there in the community. There are still a few spots left on the calendar and I am guessing that a third will follow when they fill up. The pirate team seem to be busy writing and it looks like Jag will be writing (at least) three articles this year (I have had the pleasure of reading two already – warning the second might your head hurt ๐). I like that there are some emoji clues in the description so get guessing ๐. Gimre is on the case and CryptoBeliever, Wayon, Baha and Anthony have booked their slots too. Looking forward to reading their mystery articles ๐

Know your node
A reminder from Gimre, please check your SSL certificate expiry dates on your nodes. You can run the one-liner from CryptoBeliever linked in the tweet below to check your certificate status and if your node is listed on Symbol Tools Node List then you can check the “Node SSL deadline” column here which shows that 14 nodes will drop off the network by the end of December if they do not renew their certificates.
NEM Japan Usergroup on Discord
A shout-out to any Japanese readers (or anyone that can read Japanese!) if you aren’t already a member then please sign up for the NEM Japan Usergroup Discord server. It is super active and there are lots of ongoing technical discussions and announcements. It is a slow process for me having to copy and paste text into translation software but it is definitely worth it! Is there a plugin for Discord that will automatically translate from Japanese to English?

‘Tis the season to be jolly and the pirates are sporting their festive looks ๐ I hope that they all get what they want from Santa and most importantly get some time off to relax over the festive period! ๐
Fight!
I spotted this the other day and it is hilarious and awesome in equal measure ๐ I am sure that Teria and Radio don’t have a grudge in real life but they are fighting it out in this video! I am not sure whether @maromaro1989 made this, how it was done, who (if anyone) was actually playing or what game it is – but I love it! Hope we see some more fighters enter the arena soon.
