11 Jan Symbol blockchain news update – 11/01/22
Good morning world! I started writing this last night and didn’t finish as I had a blockquote problem in WordPress that I had real issues “solving”. It is a busy one today and we have a lot to cover so I will get straight on!

Oh my word, it’s taken me forever to get something resembling a blockquote in the new look site. The result isn’t perfect but it will do for now. Anyway, get yourself over to Discord to read this thread from Hatchet in the new “#the-deck” channel. It sets out what is expected of the Pirate Crew and talks about all of the changes being made going into 2022. Joining the crew means that you will have to abide by the rules:
That means you are now responsible for the growth and management of our treasury (~815,000,000 USD). That means you are now responsible for teaching the world how to utilize Symbol - by first being a role model and using it yourself.
As you can see we have a very decent budget to hire Symbol and NEM developers in 2022! It is great to see that there is a strong ethical code being instilled in the new recruits too. Gone are the days of the dodgy backroom deals and side-projects of NGL.
You are now responsible for modeling the same ethics and values we embrace as a community: chaos, humor, kindness, and above all else transparency. You are now leaders: thought leaders, engineering leaders, design leaders. It is your responsibility to improve your own skillset and pass on your knowledge so that others may follow in your footsteps.
We are all working towards a common cause and with the right people and good management, I have every confidence that we will achieve greatness.
YOU are now responsible for the success of NEM & Symbol. No pressure.
It looks like some familiar faces will be moving on to pastures new and I wish them all the best in their new ventures. Thanks for all of your hard work! There will also be some streamlining before new developers join. The GitHub repository will be restructured and there will be some consistency in the programming languages used for different applications. Oh and there are updates to the Symbol contribution and coding guidelines as well:

2022 is going to be a high-energy, hard-working, chaotic year for us. But I believe Symbol has the makings of something great, and I am excited to see where we can take this. Those of you who carry forward with us - be prepared. There will be rough waters ahead, but this will be the journey of a lifetime. Let's show the cryptocurrency space what pirates can really do 🏴☠️
New exchange listing for Symbol
Oooh. Good news! XYM will be listed on Huobi Japan on the 13th of January (not long to wait!). It shows how strong a following Symbol has in Japan and I expect the remainder of Japanese exchanges who have not yet listed XYM will do very soon. Come on rest of the world – we have a lot of catching up to do!
Be dynamic
Here’s an interesting short thread from @hodl_dogs on how the Symbol logo was designed and how it changes based on usage. I always find it fascinating how much thought and effort goes into designing logos. I love looking at the design section of the XYM City Discord server and seeing how these things evolve. I have to admit that when different designs are presented I often can’t spot the differences between them but I think that this reinforces how meticulous this process is. Check out all of the other amazing designs on Discord – there really are some gems and you can follow the design process from early prototypes through to finished product.
We want full blocks
This would be great for any of you harvesters and node owners out there. I would love to see some full blocks and I am sure that the number of transactions will increase this year. I have seen what happened with NFT-Drive on testnet and it is a beautiful sight to behold 😁 Even gimre is coming round to the idea (with reservations) 😁
New wallet!
OK, I have to admit I don’t have all the details for this one but it looks like there is a new wallet being released and it looks fantastic! There are two articles explaining more about the features of the wallet here and here and I hope that both article(s) and the wallet UI will be translated to English as I would love to give this a try. I think that the wallet was developed by ry0_cha_ng and faunsu19000 – great job guys!
As far as I can tell, the look of the wallet will be fully customisable and allow you to purchase skins as NFTs which can then also be traded/transferred between users. I really like this idea!
Early days
Just a reminder from Hatchet that we are still in the early days of blockchain. You can see from this plot (and the full thread) that although growing rapidly now there are less than 20,000 blockchain developers worldwide which is an incredibly small number considering the ~$2T total market cap. If I were young enough to be deciding on what to do for a career this would certainly be at top of my list.
The jar of farts returns 💨
Wow, this was a crazy coincidence! You may remember this story I included in a recent blog post (see “Airdrop”) based on a tweet I saw at random the other day whilst writing it. Well, it looks like this crazy lady is back after an intestinal related hospital trip and after retiring from the dangerous profession of farting in a jar she is back selling fart jar NFTs! You really couldn’t make this stuff up! Oh, I am assuming that this is not on Symbol but I think we can live without this 😊
NEM gets a new exchange listing
Time for some NEM related news and it looks like XEM is now tradable on Bitget. This is another exchange that I am not familiar with but according to CoinMarketCap it has a top 100 listing. There can’t be many exchanges out there that have not listed XEM can there?
Hermes is taking shape
I think we still have a while to wait until release but this design really does look very cool. Hermes will be an official wallet release and the design ideas are looking hot! 🔥🔥 Great to see that we will have a lot of choices when it comes to wallets although this may be the only option available in English 😞
Arcana for iPhone?
Arcana v1.42 has been released and it looks like there will be an iOS version out soon! I will be keeping an eye out as I would like to download it and have a play but I own an iPhone so have been missing out on the fun.
Points mean prizes
Is this a loyalty reward card based on Symbol? I don’t know much about it but it looks from the translation that it is a mosaic-based loyalty reward card based on Symbol. Would love to see this take off and maybe some of the venues that accept Symbol payment will consider implementing it in their shops and restaurants.
The T word
Damn, I forgot to post this in the last update but better late than never! I don’t think that anyone likes paying tax on their crypto but for most of us, it is a necessary evil if we want to stay on the right side of the law. To make things easier cryptoBeliever has made an excellent tool that will pretty much instantaneously pull the harvest history of a Symbol account and output the date and value of each harvest in multiple fiat currencies. It really is very fast so make sure you check it out – here is the link.
