Symbol blockchain news update – 17/12/21

It’s Friday and Christmas is coming! Hope that you are getting into the holiday spirit and that you get some time off over the next week or two! I still have a few things left on my to-do list so I am going to get straight on with today’s post!

A new door on the advent calendar

Just a reminder if you haven’t read it already – @Jaguar0625 posted a new NEM Advent Calendar article on Symbol Blog yesterday! I am not going to lie, if you are not a hardcore programmer with a deep knowledge of Symbol then the code is going to blow your mind 🤯 But the article is entertaining (as always) and you should be able to pick up the basic concepts of notifications, observers and validators in the context of transfer transactions even if you don’t get all of the intricacies. You can check out the full article here.

Christmas is coming

I’m jealous Hatchet. I need to have a job where I get freebies at Christmas! 😭 Maybe the Symbol team could send out Christmas boxes in the future? A little incentive for the community to work extra hard? 😉 This box of goodies came from Valkyrie and it looking at the tweet it seems that everything is ticking along nicely. I hope that we will see an announcement very soon.

Get ready for the NEMTUS Hackathon!

This promises to be a really exciting event, I can’t wait to see the results! The NEMTUS Hackathon will be accepting registrations from the 26th of December and the event will run until February 14th (Valentine’s Day 💖). The theme of the Hackathon is “game” and entries should be submitted as web applications. Obviously, it also has to be based on Symbol (or NEM? I am not sure).

The grand prize for the winner is 10,000 XYM(!) and there will be additional prizes awarded so it is definitely worth entering if you have a good idea and the skills to implement it. Beginners are welcome too and I am sure if you don’t speak Japanese then someone will translate the rules for entry at some point – they are in pdf form currently so I couldn’t easily translate it.

The judging team has also been announced and you will see a lot of familiar faces there! 😊

NFT-Drive Christmas illustration contest

🚨 Calling all artists 🚨 It looks like NFT-Drive are holding another competition! Oh no! I have just checked the original post and it closes today so you may be too late already. Why didn’t I see this sooner! Sorry everyone 😩 You can check out the entires here anyway,

Symbol racing league?

I think from the translation of this tweet that @umesetu2011 is now not the only Symbol racer in town and that new Symbol designed cars are popping up in what I think is Gran Turismo. He is hoping to start a Symbol league so if you’re interested in joining then maybe reply to this tweet. As I mentioned before I am rubbish at driving games, maybe the only thing that I do better IRL than in video games? 😁

Symbol logo goes 3D!

@usatyun has made these super cool 3D Symbol logos. I love them!

Apparently, they were made using AutoCAD and Adobe Dimension:

Modeling → autoCAD

Converter → CAD exchanger

Texture mapping → adobeDimension

Rendering → Same as above

I am guessing, judging by the process, that this took a while to do but I think that you will agree that the finished product looks great!

The lion gets a new look

I really like @toshiya_ma‘s new avatar which was designed by everyone’s favourite Symbol artist @mahorobart who has produced some stunning NFTs over the last few months. Anyway, it looks like the work has been immortalised on the Symbol blockchain following the NEM Advent Calendar article from @monakaJP. Best of all, as it is not a mosaic, it only cost around 10XYM for 229KB of data!

Thanks!

Thanks for reading today’s update. I will be back again soon with another post. In fact, I have a NEM Advent Calendar article scheduled for the 18th so this will go live at 22:00 UTC today (17th) which is 07:00 JST. It is not at all technical but it is Symbol related 😁
