06 Dec Symbol blockchain news update – 06/12/21
It’s Monday already and I know I have been slacking off the last few days – well not really, just been working on my day job all weekend and then looking after a sick toddler. It’s all go! I have a bit of time now so I’ll try to catch up with what has been going on over the past few days and bring you all up to date with another Symbol Blog update!
Slooooow website – sorry!
You probably noticed that Symbol Blog was running pretty slowly last week. I contacted Bluehost three or four times to try to get it fixed and I don’t think that they really did anything, The site seems to be running a bit faster now which is good but the plan is to move it to the server hosting my testnet node at some point soon. I managed to set up WordPress and import everything but SSL is a nightmare to set up correctly on a barebones server. I will also need to set mail etc up so I think I need to block out some time to do it properly. It might be coming soonTM though 😁
Testnet reset
If you are running a Symbol testnet node then you need to upgrade to the latest release. There are instructions below. I upgraded my node but it is running on an IP address rather than the usual domain name at the moment due to my likely move from Bluehost onto this server.
NEM/Symbol Hackathon!
Ooh, NEMTUS is holding a hackathon! The date is still to be announced but Hatchet, Gimre and Jag are judging. If you have the skills then keep an eye out for registration details. I will post more information as soon as I learn about it. Can’t wait to see what the entrants build – exciting!
NEM Advent Calendar
I hope that you guys are keeping up with the NEM Advent Calendar posts! Most of the articles are about Symbol so if you are a fan of this blog then they should interest you! I have been updating my advent calendar article with links to the author’s Twitter pages and to the articles in this post so go check them out!

Thanks, Oliver for flying the flag for Symbol Blog! I would love to get some more global reach so spread the word guys and hopefully we can spark some interest in Symbol and NEM around the world. There is a long way to go but it would be awesome to build our readership, get more community contributions and grow rather than stagnate. If you have an idea for an article then I’d be happy to publish it on the blog (unless it’s completely outrageous and will offend people that is 😅).
Also, delegates are always welcomed with open arms, I do appreciate everyone that is harvesting on my node. I don’t know who most of you are but maybe I should start a contributors page and can link to your Twitter pages and websites if you want to. Just a thought 🤔
Symbol Directory
Here’s a reminder for you. If you have a Symbol related resource, website or even a Symbol node that you would like to promote then you can list it in Symbol Directory. It’s free and it needs filling up! I’d love it if this became my go-to place to keep up with Symbol sites but only 14 projects have been listed so far 🙁 Submit your projects people! If you don’t have your own then suggest other cool Symbol sites that you find useful!
New Symbol mobile wallet?
Spotted this post on Twitter and it looks like there is a new unofficial Symbol wallet nearing release. I am guessing it will be Japanese only but maybe there will be an English translation. Might be cool to download and test it out. As far as I can tell it will be available on Google Play later this week. I have an iPhone so I am out of luck for now.
Coming soonTM to Symbol and NEM
Tresto asks the questions that have been on everyone’s lips recently. What is coming next now that the forks have successfully passed? The answer: hiring. Great to see that the team will be expanding, hopefully, it will be a case of “many hands make light work” rather than “too many cooks spoil the broth” – sorry, getting my own back on the tricky Japanese idiom translations 😁 I think it is clear that with the grand future plans that we need a bigger team and it’s great that this will happen!
But what about the new websites? Well, I am going to guess that it will not be a December release – Hatchet is always optimistic about timelines and even she isn’t confident of this 😄 Let’s hope that we see them sometime in January. They have been a long time in the pipeline!

Sorry, I know that I will have missed lots over the last few days but I will try my best to keep up. It’s been pretty manic over the past few weeks but my to-do list is gradually shrinking so maybe the updates will start coming more regularly again in a week or two (don’t expect anything on the 24th-27th December though – taking some time off!!!) 😁
