10 Nov Symbol blockchain news update – 10/11/21
Good morning and welcome to another edition of the Symbol Blog update! It’s Wednesday already and there isn’t long to go until the Cyprus hard fork outcome will be revealed. I will get onto this a little later but it’s looking good! I don’t want any of us to get complacent though as you will know that things can change at the last minute and there are always some people that are out to cause some chaos. If you haven’t updated your Symbol (or NEM) node then please do so ASAP. We are nearly there and once this is over we can concentrate on the important task of building. both in the technical sense and by strengthening the community. I do feel that this event has brought us even closer together and it is clear that we share the same vision and passion for the future. Love you guys 😁❤️
Fork update
OK so thankfully after all of the twists and turns and ups and downs in this saga the result is looking pretty promising and we passed the threshold of support for the Cyprus fork! 🥳 As I just mentioned, this is not the final result, things can, and do, change so in order to put this beyond any doubt – UPGRADE YOUR SYMBOL NODE NOW!!!!
Here are the latest stats and I can’t tell you how happy (and relieved) I am to see that we have the community support for this fork. The result should be finalised tomorrow/Friday so you will be glad to know that I will not be bugging you about Cyprus after that.
The NEM Harlock fork is looking more and more promising but the result is not in the bag yet. Come on NEM node owners – you can do this, just another few percent to put this one over the line too. UPGRADE YOUR NEM NODES NOW!!!!
Also, if you don’t have your own node then please delegate to a node that supports the Harlock fork – this is really important. The yellow sections you see are harvesters and these may decide the final outcome depending on whether they are delegating to Harlock nodes or not.
Fork timings and reasons behind them
There have been some complaints in the community about the timeline for the forks. For some people this came completely out of the blue. Symbol Blog did see it coming and dropped a few hints but there was no official word until last week giving a short 1 week turnaround for node owners to respond. Hatchet explains the reasoning behind this in this thread.
I urge you to read in full (Hatchet replies in English) as it also gives information on what will happen in the case of future forks. The shortened version is that the timeline of forks will be dependent on what they are for, e.g. urgent updates such as security patches will have a very short turnaround (24 hours) whereas large feature updates will have a longer timeline (2-6 months) and require extensive evaluation on testnet before going live on mainnet.
Post fork
I think that the team have been embroiled in battles with the old guard, prepping for the fork, tweeting hard to get support and putting 100% of their efforts into making sure that this succeeds. This has taken a lot of the focus off what they want to do which is to actually drive the development of their vision. However, post successful (I am optimistic) forks and a well deserved short break, they will come out all guns blazing and we can push forward with our mission for world domination. I am really excited to see what happens over the months ahead.
Symbol subChains
I am not going to translate these tweets for you as you should go check out the original post but here is a good introduction to the concept of subChains, a new feature that is planned for Symbol. It also explains how NEM is planned as a Symbol subChain and what its function will be. You can use the translate function on Twitter but as many of my readers are Japanese anyway you can read in your native language! 😆
There is also a section on subChains in the vision document “Symbol²: Reflections of Space Pirates“. If you haven’t seen this already then it is an essential read!
Other news
I’ve talked non-stop about the forks in recent days but here are a few lighter stories that put a smile on my face..
Let’s get artistic
Nice work @Rei0_018_! Here’s Gimre looking good (and relaxed) maybe this is a future Gimre post-fork success 😁 I would love to feature some more art in the blog so if anyone has anything just tag me in it and I will try to add it in a future blog post. Apologies, I miss a lot of stuff so let me know and then I will definitely see it!
Building a XYM retail empire
You may remember I featured another item about Joel “Shop local with Symbol” a few days ago. It seems that he is a bit of a businessman and has multiple ventures. I still don’t know where in the Philippines his businesses are based but you can now buy milk tea and fried noodles with XYM and XEM!
Hoodie anyone?
Spotted this post whilst browsing Twitter and I love the hoodie! I do need to get some Symbol branded attire, now that all of the brand assets are free to use I guess I can just design my own and get it printed online. Maybe I will have a go at this when I get some free time, do a bit of advertising in my local area 😁
I think, from the automatic translation at least, that there may be some spare hoodies for sale (I guess Japan only) and you need to contact @shintaso_ for further details.
Quadratic funding
I think soon here may still be several months(?) since I think judging from the Pirate post about what is coming post-fork with the restructuring, it will require a new entity to be set up before it kicks off – see “New Structure” here.
No more drama please!
This goes for for me too. I hate drama, I am a glutton for punishment being a Symbol (and ex-NEM) holder. This is the thing that I crave the most and one of the reasons that I think many of us support the forks. I want a future where we can focus on what matters and not be infighting and squabbling between different factions. No more scandals and revelations. I want a quiet life for Symbol and NEM where we focus on what is important for the good of the project and the community rather than the gain for individuals.
Thanks
Thanks again for reading. I will be back soon with another update. Two final reminders:
- Upgrade your nodes! If you haven’t done this already then you have very little time left to support the Cyprus fork and you don’t want to leave it until the last minute for Harlock (which really needs your support) either.
- If you have news you would like me to report then let me know! Don’t be shy, I am a nice guy 😁 Also I would love to see some more guest posts so if you have anything you would like us to publish then get in contact.
I’m a Symbol and NEM enthusiast and run this blog to try to grow awareness of the platform in the English-speaking world. If you have any Symbol news you would like me to report on or you have an article that you would like to publish then please let me know!
