09 Nov Symbol blockchain news update – 09/11/21
Hi everyone and welcome to Tuesday’s Symbol Blog update! It’s still fork fever on Twitter and there isn’t a huge amount of other news to report on but I will bring you up to date on the latest happenings and screw ups that are adding yet more drama to the fork saga this morning..
Allnodes throw another spanner in the works 🤦♂️
Oh dear.. Another day another drama..
Well it seems after yesterday’s update rollback debacle there is yet more bad news for Allnodes. After implementing an “upgrade” button in the dashboard it seems that there were some issues meaning that users could not update to the latest version supporting the fork even after opting in. This seems to be affecting nodes numbered in the 740s and above. You can see quite clearly that there is an issue just looking at the node list.
I hope that this will be resolved automatically soon but this is really not the time for assumptions so please contact Allnodes to ask them to resolve it if you think that you have upgraded but the node list still shows you node running on the previous version.
Last second edit: Has it been resolved? I just saw a big jump in the number of Allnodes nodes supporting the fork.. If so good job Allnodes for resolving the issue!
Keep track of the the fork progress
@Jaguar0625 wrote some code to obtain fork progress stats and make some pretty plots.
For the non-technical minded @Hatchet has set up a cron job to run every 15 minutes and display the plots so that we can keep up to date with progress of both Cyprus and Harlock forks.
You can check out the page here. At the time of writing this is what the current results look like (sorry for the resolution – downsizing them from a 4K screenshot seems to have taken its toll somewhat).
As we know the Allnodes stats should be higher since many nodes have opted in to upgrade but were not actually upgraded.. Hopefully this will push us even closer to the goal once the issue is resolved.
The Harlock fork is looking more and more promising than it did. I really hope that we can make it, remember if you are a XEM harvester then please make sure that you delegate to an upgraded node – you will be helping the cause.
What’s at stake?
If the forks were not to pass then I am not sure what will happen. For sure there will be no more Hatchet which would be a massive loss for us. Will Jaguar and Gimre stay? I don’t know, if the fork doesn’t pass then essentially we are saying we have no confidence in their vision so I guess this would be a huge blow to the people that gave us both NEM and Symbol and have worked so hard over the last few years. This would be tragic and I hate to think what will happen to the projects should these forks fail. There is no “plan B” here guys, we may end up with two chains that are not being actively developed and the future plans that we currently have, the excitement of the community, the hope for the future gone. There is so much at stake and I am not sure that everyone understands this.
Please support the forks, together we have the power to push them through but it is a community effort. By upgrading your node or showing your support by delegating your harvesting to an upgraded node we can win this. Let’s make it happen.
Good riddance
We reported on Hatchet’s tweet yesterday – see “Some people are just dicks”. It seems that a large NEM/Symbol holder was trying to hold the team to ransom by demanding they be added as co-founders of the new foundation or they would not upgrade their nodes to support the forks. This is crazy behaviour, for one it is childish, two is it blackmail and three it would hurt them if the forks didn’t pass since the value of their holdings would plummet.
Anyway, it seems that they sold up and their voting power is probably now sat on an exchange or being added to many other individuals wallets. We don’t need people like that trying to use their wealth for additional personal gains. Good riddance.
If you’ve got it then use it!
I wish I had a spare million dollars or so to buy enough XYM to start a voting node. If you are very lucky and are sitting on 3M+ XYM then you really should be running a voting node. Kudos to those of you that are and those of you who are taking this step.
Thanks
Thanks as always for reading. I know that my posts are all about the forks at the moment but I think that’s what is on pretty much everyone’s mind right now and there isn’t much else to report on. I will be back soon and hopefully will be able to mix it up a bit and report on some other topics too 😁
Oh and remember: upgrade your nodes!!!
