23 Jul Symbol blockchain tweet update – 24/07/21
Phew, it has been a long week and I am exhausted. The blog must go on though so here is Saturday’s Symbol Blog news update. I am publishing this super early the day before as I need a break and some time to relax – it’s Friday night so I think I earned it 😊
NEM community Q&A results (part 1)
So this caught me by surprise yesterday evening so I thought I would mention it again today. @0x6861746366574, @Jaguar0625 and @NCOSIGIMCITYNRE published their responses to the first 52 community questions put to them a few weeks ago. There will be a part 2 so the community must have asked a lot of questions. I asked number 25 on this list by the way and the response points to Symbol Blog which I thought was funny – point here is that if you want something to happen then make it happen! 😆
I was going to make a separate post about this and pick out some gems but it’s not very long so I encourage you to read it for yourselves and see what you think!
Setting up your Ledger hardware wallet with XYM
In case you hadn’t seen it yet and you were thinking of taking the plunge and buying a hardware wallet I would recommend checking out my latest article on the blog 😊
Harvesting stats
Always my favourite subject 😊 Just to let you know I produce harvesting stats each week on a Friday and today was no exception.
I only publish weekly stats but thought I would put together some summary plots showing what I have found over the past 15 weeks (6th April – 23rd July).
Harvesting balance on the network
These stats are taken directly from all API nodes on the network, I obtain accounts harvesting on all nodes and then retrieve the balance for each of these accounts. I will likely be underestimating as some nodes cannot be queried directly and therefore any accounts harvesting there will be missed. I would estimate that this is a relatively small proportion so the numbers won’t be wildly out and the trend is certainly going to be correct. If anyone can tell me a better way to obtain harvesting accounts then please let me know!
As you can see the total balance of harvesters on the network has continued to increase over time, partly I guess due to exchanges distributing XYM to their customers and partly due to increasing numbers of harvesters and current holders stocking up whilst the price is low. If you noticed that your harvesting income is reducing over time then this is why I’m afraid.
Number of harvesters on the network
This plot again only plots harvesters on API nodes and will only count accounts that are harvesting at the moment in time that I query the node, if they were harvesting previously but e.g. their balance dropped below 10,000 XYM then they would not be included in the count for that week.
As you can see, and similar total balance, the number of active harvesters has increased week on week with a few blips along the way. Obviously the price of XYM has decreased since launch making it more affordable for new harvesters to meet the 10,000XYM minimum and start harvesting.
Number of nodes on the network
The number of nodes (and I will skip any non-API nodes so this isn’t the best of data) is pretty variable. My first datapoint is in April but it looks like the number of nodes peaked in the middle of April and has been up and down ever since. The overall number is relatively stable (give or take a couple of hundred nodes) but it seems nodes drop in and out depending on competition for harvesters, XYM price etc.
Actually it would be really interesting to correlate these stats with price fluctuations – I will write myself a note to do this and maybe publish a longer blog post with some discussion.
As you may know I also run a (very poorly designed 😆) website XYMHarvesting.com which has more detailed stats on node balance, total harvesting income for every account and node currently harvesting, some pretty plots and and harvesting calculator. If you are interested please have a look! I am sorry web design really bores me and I can’t bring myself to make it look pretty. It is functional though!
Sending transactions for non programmers
So I spotted this post from @nembear based on an article from nem_takanobu on Qiita. It’s a hard translate for me but it seems to be a guide to sending transactions through Google Chrome developer console 😆 No setup required – just follow the instructions and go. It’s kind of a fun introduction actually and will get you thinking about how transactions work. I would love to translate this into English at some point in the future but I will ask for permission first. If anyone knows nem_takanobu then please let me know – he has written some amazing articles and I would love to translate them and put them on the blog 😊
School of NEM 👨🏻🏫
School time again! Thanks @alediemmee for sending in this @SchoolofNEM tweet. This refers to a 2018 interview (well short Q&A session) with the core developer Bloody Rookie, who I think is the only core dev without a Twitter account! There are links in the tweet to both English and Japanese versions.
Another blast from the past from School of NEM, this time from May 2018 and the Consensus Conference in New York City. NEM went big and rented out an entire 2,050 square foot (190.45 m2) floor of exhibition space. I bet that cost a fortune! Anyway, if you want to see more from that event there here is a short recap!
I’m a Symbol and NEM enthusiast and run this blog to try to grow awareness of the platform in the English-speaking world. If you have any Symbol news you would like me to report on or you have an article that you would like to publish then please let me know!
